Can Jim Kyle Win The Democratic Nomination For Governor?

Posted on July 3, 2009 at 11:20 am

No reason to give him less of a shot than the other candidates, says Tom Humphrey:

Three are West Tennessee candidates - two of them neighbors in rural “middle west” and one from urban Shelby County, which typically has close to 25 percent of the vote in a statewide Democratic primary.

Kyle, thus, has a base. Thanks to his father, former Gov. Ned Ray, McWherter will have some statewide name recognition (and, as with Cammack, some ability to self-finance - though probably not at Bredesen, Frist, Corker or Haslam levels). But McWherter and Herron are splitting their geographic base, not to mention Democrats outside of rural West who are otherwise fond of both.

In a low-budget primary, the candidate with a base and the most money could be very well positioned. As stated, we’ll know soon who has the most fundraising ability. Except for Kyle.

And it just could be that not knowing Kyle’s fundraising ability could help with fundraising, given his base.

You have completely ignored Kim McMillan’s chances. Oh, I forgot - she is a woman - and this is Tennessee!

No matter what you think of him, in a Dem primary, Shelby County matters. And Jim Kyle will rack it up in Shelby County. Its a gamechanger.

The field needs to narrow quickly. McWherter can’t win only on his father’s name recognition, because it just isn’t there with the younger generation, and that is about all he has going for him.
