Can Democrats really support a field of five candidates for governor?

Yes, they can. A contested primary, as I said somewherre else, actually produces a better candidate, more enthusiasm, momentum, and more ability to raise money.

That said, there won’t be five major candidates by primary time. Someone will get out. I think it is even possible, although remotely so, that the field will be cleared for one of them (McWherter). But I am aware that’s really unlikely.

Look for someone who just can’t raise the money to get out (best bet: McMillan), or someone who just can’t get the support (best bet: Cammack), and either Kyle or Herron. And the reason both of them could be out is that five to six month hole in next year’s calendar — a period in which they cannot raise money. That will be a big deal for them both.

There won’t be three candidates from West Tennessee by the primary. Kyle’s entry will probably end up forcing out either Herron or McWherter.

McWherter is the one candidate absolutely guaranteed to stay in.

And, in the age of technology, Grand Division geography hasn’t really been a factor for a generation.

Yeah I dont see Herron sticking around. Those depression level unemployment numbers will prove to much to overcome in the end. McWherter is pretty much the only one I think that can stay close to Haslam or Ramsey in the general. Its weird watching how far the dems fallen in candidate quality. In ‘94 and ‘02 they had a great candidate in Bredesen. In 1986 they had a great list in the primary. None of this crowd is even close to them in my opinion.

I’m going to say it will be either Cammack to drop out.

McWherter is the only one with staying power.

Kyle and McMillan both voted for a state income tax. TOAST.

Herron is too much of a preacher for the Democratic primary voters.

    Cammack is a nut job.

    That leaves McWherter.

    1) it will be one of the two Weakley County folks dropping out. 2) Mike is NOT Ned, people forget that. 3) Kyle does have an advantage because of the humongous turnout Big Shelby will have due to the 9th District race. 4) Unless Cammack hires another big gun, I don’t see how he survives the departure of Mark Brown. 5) We are still over a year out, people, LOTS could happen between now and then.

True, Cracker, lots could happen, but . . .

Looks to me like McMillan and Cammack are dead in the water.

Herron has damaged his credibility by being dishonest about his voting record and sponsoring guns in bars.

Looks like a McWherter-Kyle battle. Kyle has to overcome his vote for the income tax. We shouldn’t discount how big that is.

OOO, the big bad income tax, the thing that causes Williamson Countians to miss their ferrari payment! Please, that’s OVER.

Put both Jim and Mike on TV and see what happens. MIKE IS NOT NED, and that will become more apparent as time goes on. Nice guy, but he ain’t his daddy.

The income tax is far from “over” as an issue. We’ve had this discussion about Kim McMillan and the same goes for Kyle. Every discussion about either of them becomes a discussion about the income tax. That’s not what either wants to talk about.

    ACK -

    1) There’s a car?

    2) If there is a car, can any of the Democratic campaigns afford to fill it up after their Congressional brethren pass cap-and-trade?

    Cheers,

    Rob

McWherter the “only one with staying power” ? Oh, pleeeze! You can only ride so far on your dad’s coattails, and he really has no substance or experience past that. McWherter will have to drop out, have you heard him speak??? He can’t buy enthusiasm for his candidacy among voters. Especially after they hear him speak.

Really too much passion in this comment thread, folks. They’re fighting for the honor of receiving a 20-point beatdown by either Ramsey, Haslam, or Wamp come November, 2010. Does it really matter which loser you choose when they’re going to be a loser nonetheless?

    Cheers,

    Rob

Ramsey, Haslam or Wamp??? If that is what TN has to look forward to, guess I’d better put my house on the market and move. We can’t take any more of this Republican rule. There’s a reason they haven’t been in control for so many years. Look at what they do. When this reign of terror is over they won’t get back in for another 20 years. Unless I underestimate the stupidity of folks in TN.
