Rep. Curt Cobb Resigns

Posted on July 1, 2009 at 9:26 am

John Carney breaks the story. Also at NashvillePost.com.

As they say, THIS IS HUGE.

UPDATE: Braisted with the insty analysis:

In 2008, Rep. Cobb won re-election by a 55-45 margin against the Republican Barbara Blanton. Also that year Barack Obama got creamed by John McCain in that district, losing all but 2 of the 33 precincts represented by Cobb, and losing Bedford County by a 2-1 margin.

All this indicates a tough uphill climb for the Democrats to retain the seat in an environment where Republicans in the South are getting increasingly agitated by the direction our country is going (ie, away from them). The Democratic caucus is going to have to find a really popular figure in Bedford if they hope to keep this seat, and thus keep the shaky 50-50 split (when one includes Speaker Williams with the Dems) that we currently have.

    So let’s see…

How’s that recruiting coming from the Democratic Party “elders” who were willing to destroy the state party in order to be in charge of recruiting candidates?

Where’s Bredesen, Cooper, Gordon, Davis, and Tanner (not to mention Harrison, Dr. Jellyfinger, and TennRod) to comfort all of us with some “great candidate” The Establishment has in their back pockets that can keep this seat in Democratic hands?

My advice to Democrats and progressives… keep your powder dry. The state party is being held hostage by the Governor and his Blue Dog lackeys and you should only go campaign and contribute to candidates who support a populist progressive platform. The good ol’ boys are going to have to wither on the vine and get bounced out before we can rebuild the TNDP.

    ‘Nuff said!

I’ll be the first to congratulate my friend from Bedford County. He will be an asset in this role. I look forward to Republicans finding a nice replacement for former Representative Cobb soon. Good luck in the elections!

Huge is an understatement. This seat has a good chance of going GOP.

Look at Braisted’s “update”…..what 50-50 split? Was he not paying attention when John Litz said that he won’t be running for reelection either? Typical “citizen journalist” shotty reporting. Consider the Democrats now -2 in the House.

Joseph the dems will recruit some Obama loving little twenty something just out of college. If they do that they just elected a Republican.

I don’t think he is saying there will be a 50-50 split. I think he was saying it would be an uphill climb if the Dems want to keep a 50-50 split (when counting Kent Williams as a Dem).

To be clearer, he is referring to what there basically is on Capitol Hill now…

When Mr Peach won that house seat back in the 90’s that Tidwell now holds, that started giving the GOP hope in this types of seats. Then when Dr. Hensley won in Hohenwald, that pretty much made it official that the dems had lost control of these types of house seats.

    TNO,

Umm, yeah, if you read the post, you’d see I was talking about session next year, not after the 2010 elections. But, good catch I guess.

And also, since the House has 99 members, there can’t be a 50-50 split anyway.

Yeah, smart thinking, Tyler. You really know what you’re talking about . . .
