The Mae Beavers Seat: The Players

Posted on June 22, 2009 at 3:56 pm

Reporter J.R. Lind reported this morning on Twitter that Senator Mae Beavers will not run for re-election to the state Senate in 2010 and instead run for Wilson County Mayor.

Lind now has a brief article up at the Lebanon Democrat website on the developing story.

In it, Lind runs down some of the potential names running and mulling running for the seat.

Aubrey Givens, Bob Rochelle’s opponent in the Democratic primary in 2006 filed papers with the state a week ago making his candidacy official.

“With the announcement that Senator Beavers will run for Wilson County Mayor, I obviously do not know my opponent for the upcoming election. No matter who it turns out to be, I look forward to a spirited race with informative debates so that the folks of the 17the Senatorial District will be armed with the knowledge of the candidates that they desire and require in determining the best person for the job,” said Givens.

On the GOP side, Lind reports Republican A.J. McCall, a candidate for state House against Stratton Bone in ‘08, reports it “looks like” he will run for the seat.

Rep. Susan Lynn is non-committal.

“I will definitely look at my options. I am not ruling anything out at this point. I leave on Saturday for a fellowship in Germany. After I return, I will take a hard look at the numbers in the district. I would certainly be honored to represent the good people of the 17th district,” Lynn said in an email to Post Politics.

Former county party chairman Philip Warren is also said to be mulling a decision.

Richard Lawson’s new websites reported early last week this was going to happen. Other than the actual announcement, this is old news - even down to the prospective candidates.

A Susan Lynn vs. A.J. McCall primary matchup would get ugly quick. A.J. likes to talk smack and Susan wears her feelings on her sleave. Can you say KABOOM!
