The Sherri Goforth Apology

Posted on June 16, 2009 at 1:07 pm

Has been issued:

“I want to offer my deepest apology regarding the offensive nature of the email forwarded to several of my colleagues. I also want to make it clear that it was forwarded to me from an acquaintance with absolutely no political party ties and who is outside the Tennessee Capitol Hill arena. I should have deleted it upon receipt. Again, I am deeply sorry and offer a sincere apology to anyone offended.”

    Only YOU can prevent racism.

    Good for you, Sherri.

Not only should you delete emails like this in the future, but rebuke the sender as well. Racism may not be as mainstream as it was 40+ years ago, but it’s still out there. Every little bit you can do to stop perpetuating it helps.

The question now is, where did the email come from?

Likely from some yo-yo outside the legislature/state government, and, if so, not much more to do, unless you wish to put him or her in the stocks in the town square or something, in which case, you’re on your own.

This bimbo is not only racist, she’s stupid. The fact that she’s still has a job says something about who she works for.

A classy lady doesn’t forward racist emails.

Oh Sherri - You may not have created the monster but you feed it. Shame on you and your boss, you especially should be fired and your boss Rep. Black should be reprimanded.
Is this a county of bigotry?

Her FIRST apology was for “sending an email to the ‘wrong list’” which, of course, only implies that there is a “right list” for this kind of activity, and that it is expressly endorsed by both Sherri and the office she represents. Unfortunately, this is the kind of deplorable race-baiting we’ve come to expect from the Tennessee GOP.

As for this second failed “attempt” at an apology - a true apology does not contain “ifs” and “buts.”

She is not sorry she sent racist email, just sorry that she got caught sending racist email to people who aren’t in her good ol’ boy/girl club.

    In Defense of Ms Goforth:

The eMail Ms. Goforth dispatched is indefensible as is her poor excuse of sending it to the wrong list of people. Ms. Goforth used very poor judgment in sending the eMail to anyone or in thinking it was funny or entertaining.

In a sound bite it is easy to paint Ms. Goforth as a racist and a hater of the disadvantaged. Sherri is anything but a racist or a hater. If Sherri were known as the person she is, it would not be hard to understand why she was not fired.

I have known Sherri since 1968, the year she began her career in state government in Tennessee. I was so impressed by her, I employed her as my personal legal assistant for 13 years while she was not working in State government. I found Sherri to be a loving, loyal, compassionate, and intelligent person. I never saw her demonstrate anything but respect for everyone, regardless of their race. I know she goes out of her way to befriend people; I know she sees people as human beings. I know she has a heart for everyone. Sherri is not a racist; she is not a hater. She is not stupid.

Sherri has been married to the same man for over 40 years. Their family is an example for us all to admire and imitate. She and Steve have two adopted children, biological siblings, who were removed from their unfit biological parents by the State; the children were 9 and 10 at the time of adoption. The Goforths also have a special needs biological child with Downes Syndrome, now in her 30’s. A few years ago Steve quit his job to open a small take-out restaurant for Katie so she could become independent. Katie is the chef. The restaurant has been a big success. As a result Katie has made a name for herself; Sherri and Steve have given Katie a skill that will ensure her independence when they are gone. Katie is quite a remarkable person.

Sherri’s entire life has been one of hard work, endurance, sacrifice, and love. I never heard either Steve or Sherri complain about their circumstances. They focused on the challenge and the blessing. Sherri and Steve are supporters of the Special Olympics; they also work with parents of Downs children to see the blessing they have been given.

This unfortunate incident does not define Sherri Goforth. Sherri deserves another chance. Sherri truly has a heart for the whole world, without exception. We can all learn from this incident. We’ve all had lapses in good judgment. In the end, forgiveness always trumps castigation. We are all in this together.

Robert, I have no sympathy for someone who sends out racist emails. She may be sweet and great towards you, but I suspect you are not a minority. Her little joke was offensive and hurtful to many people.

All emails should be treated as an open record. Don’t say things you wouldn’t want shown in a courtroom. In today’s age, emails fall into the wrong hands and the consequences are dire because of a stupid action. People have lost friends and jobs from their stupidity. A racist smear definitely qualifies as a reason to lose a job especially if one has a government job.

I think it is great she apologized, but there should still be consequences for her actions.

This is no different than the Letterman/Willow Palin joke.

Both are offensive and should not be tolerated.

But where is the lefts outrage at the Joking about the rape of a 14 year old girl.

Funny thing about True Conservitives most see them as the same bigotry.

Just think, in a few weeks when you’re stuffing the senators fundraising invitations, how this will be a distant memory.
