Harold Ford Equivocates In Condemning Letterman Willow Palin Joke

Posted on June 11, 2009 at 8:37 am

From Newsbusters:

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I wonder if it was the kid of Al Gore or Bill Clinton when he was president, or the Obamas, if that joke would ever be told.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: No, it never would.

HAROLD FORD, JR.: No, I disagree, I disagree. I’ve seen him go after –

BRZEZINSKI: But I mean this is an edge, this is an edge, to go after the kid and the issue of pregnancy in talking about a kid. I mean, come on. I’m talking about in this way.

FORD: Don’t get me wrong. It was wrong. But I think he goes after, he’s gone after—you do not have—the Palin situation is unique, and I don’t want to get in the middle of their situation.

BRZEZINSKI: Why is it unique? I know a number of Democrats who have kids who have gotten pregnant.

FORD: Well –

BRZEZINSKI: Why is it unique?

FORD: I don’t. Not at that—anyway, I don’t want to get in the middle. He apologized.

Interpretation (i.e. excuse): It’s OK to hate on the Palin’s because they’re “unique.” Unique meaning they’re Republicans.

Remember the reaction to comments about Clinton “pimpin” Chelsea?

I really like Mika Brzezinski. She’s liberal, but she’s reasonable. If she sees some being treated unfairly on either side, she’s willing to talk about it rather than go into automatic defense mode like Ford is doing. That’s why she’s a breath of fresh air on MSNBC. I guarantee she wouldn’t have cut someone’s mike because he was actually challenging the premise of the questions.

Once again, let’s clarify for all the hyperventilating GOPasaurs, out there:

Letterman made a joke about Palin’s “daughter”, didn’t specify whether he was referring to 14 year old Willow or 18 year old Bristol (who actually WAS knocked up).

He admitted the joke was in poor taste. It was also funny. Had Mama Palin and Todd simply ignored a joke in poor taste, its like most of America would have never have heard about the joke.

What we have here is an NBC/Universal outlet seeking to gain some ground by putting a CBS show on the political hot seat.

And why should we give a s*#t if Harold Ford condemns it or not?

    Sigh…

Repeat after me: “Comedians are not pundits. Pundits are not comedians. Comedians are not pundits. Pundits are not comedians. Comedians are not pundits. Pundits are not comedians. Comedians are not pundits. Pundits are not comedians. Comedians are not pundits. Pundits are not comedians.”

…above and beyond Letterman being a JERK…this sort of attack undermines our electorial system. What sane, caring person (no matter how wonderful and qualified they happened to be) would put themselves or members of their family in a position to be so ridiculed and degraded?

    Jon

If Comedians are not pundits, then Comedians should not have politicans as guests.

And Comedians should stay out of politics.

Remember Palin was credited for many statements made by Tina Fey

Example “I can see Russia from my house.”

“Letterman made a joke about Palin’s “daughter”, didn’t specify whether he was referring to 14 year old Willow or 18 year old Bristol (who actually WAS knocked up).”

The 14 year old attended the Yankees game and Letterman said Palin’s daughter got “knocked up by A-rod” in the 7th inning, that’s why it was assumed he was talking about her. Even if he meant the 18 year old, I always thought politicians kids were off limits?

“What we have here is an NBC/Universal outlet seeking to gain some ground by putting a CBS show on the political hot seat.”

Apparently Keith Olbermann didn’t get that memo.

“Comedians are not pundits. Pundits are not comedians.”

I dunno, Rachel Maddow use to be a stand up comedian. Glenn Beck is doing stand up. What is Jon Stewart — pundit or comedian. The lines are blurred these days.

Bristol did not go to the Yankee’s game..

So his comments were about a 14 year old (Willow).

just turn the statment around and insert Michelle and Sasha. and see the reaction you would get.

I gotta hand it to the GOP right wing on talking points management. A neo-con loony shot up the Holocaust Museum, another shining example of the smelly piles of hate coming from the right, and everyone is totally discussing - –

    David Letterman.

    Wow. Freakin’ wow.

Wink, wink, nod, nod. Everything is fine. He wasn’t talking about raping the 14 year old. It was just the 18 year old. Get out! BTW, did you hear the one about Michelle Obama taking her daughters to France to break them in, because the French are such sensitive lovers. Doesn’t something have to be just a little tiny bit funny for it to be a joke?

Neo-Con??? wow.. I thought NAZIs were socialists like Obama, and His Pastor

Them Jews Control Obama.. so says his Liberal Pastor.

Looks Like, the Shooter has more incommon with Obama’s background than the Conservitives.

Mikey - Let’s see, Letterman makes a completely tasteless joke about the 14 year old daughter of a woman the left loves to hate and you’re talking about hate from the right. Shows your high level of hate. If you had bothered to inform yourself and be honest about the guy who shot up the Holocaust Museum, you’d know he hated Christians and is a socialist. But again, your hate is so strong you’ll falsely accuse your “enemies” of anything.

Jon - twisting context matters to someone trying to excuse the propagation of hate.

  13. dontcallmemikey writes

no - he did not. he made a joke about Bristol, the 18-year-old daughter. The Palin’s AND your media buddies chose to make it about the younger one - watch the Letterman video tape, and not Hannity’s, and you’ll see - he mentioned no name, and was inferring the older - in the public eye - daughter. Who, oh by the way, did a TV tour to talk about her pregnancy and views on sex, just a few weeks ago.

LOL … but then, of course, you wouldn’t have bothered to think that far, would you? Your hate for liberals is so strong, you’ll accuse a TV talk show host of anything if it fits your sense of conservative outrage.

Oh, btw - he hated everybody. The point you fail to understand is that Beck, Coulter, Limbaugh, etc. fuel every nut with a grudge. Frankly, I think they hate America and what its become and are using every tool in the shed to tear this country down.

    Letterman’s a comedian. Rush is a disgrace.

  14. TNVolunteer73 writes

I dotn listen to rush or coulter

Beck is a very intellegen man

He has inflamed people by warning them of the

Mortgage Crisis in 2004 warned people there was an impending Mortgage Crisis

He was right, the crisis hit in 2008

He warned that Obama if elected would run up the national debt at a record pace (this years budget defict is 400 Times the former Record Budget Defict)

    he was right

He said there was an upcomming Economy Tsunami in 2007

    He was correct.

He said the fed would begin printing money because there will not be enough buyers of treasury Bonds/Bills

They have printed a 2.5 trillion new dollars this year (1.2 Trillion in just 1 day 3/17/2009) put this on top of a 1.5-2.5 Trillion dollar defict….

He said that there would be a nationalization of 1. Banks (done) Transporation (Done) and Energy (in the process of being Done) in 2007

  15. dontcallmemikey writes

    Here’s some of Beck’s gas:

    * “Every night I get down on my knees and pray that Dennis Kucinich will burst into flames.” (2003)
    * “I’m thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I’m wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it.” (2005)
    * “When I see a 9/11 victim family on television, or whatever, I’m just like, ‘Oh shut up’ I’m so sick of them because they’re always complaining.” (2005)

Lessee - the first is pretty harmless, I’m sure Kucinich was amused. The third is repugnant to anyone who lost friends and family on 9/11 - I’m sure you don’t consider that an intelligent thing to say; the middle one is VERY close to inciting someone to commit murder, which is illegal.

Intelligent? Well, maybe 2005 was an off-year… oh, btw - Letterman’s a comedian, Beck is a commentator. One is trying to be funny, the other is trying to shed light on events in the news …

    Don’t call me.

lets see.. have you never heard of the term Satire…

sat⋅ire  /ˈsætaɪər/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [sat-ahyuhr] Show IPA
–noun 1. the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

“The fusion of entertainment and enlightenment.”

But according to Ford. The statments you mention are not anything of consequence.

Mikey, best button up your shirt, your double standard is showing.

    DAVID LETTERMAN’S HATE, ETC. !

David Letterman’s hate is as old as some ancient Hebrew prophets.
Speaking of anti-Semitism, it’s Jerry Falwell and other fundy leaders who’ve gleefully predicted that in the future EVERY nation will be against Israel (an international first?) and that TWO-THIRDS of all Jews will be killed, right?
Wrong! It’s the ancient Hebrew prophet Zechariah who predicted all this in the 13th and 14th chapters of his book! The last prophet, Malachi, explains the reason for this future Holocaust that’ll outdo even Hitler’s by stating that “Judah hath dealt treacherously” and “the Lord will cut off the man that doeth this” and asks “Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother?”
Haven’t evangelicals generally been the best friends of Israel and Jewish persons? Then please explain the recent filthy, hate-filled, back-stabbing tirades by David Letterman (and Sandra Bernhard) against a leading evangelical named Sarah Palin, and explain why most Jewish leaders have seemingly condoned Palin’s continuing “crucifixion”!
While David and Sandra are tragically turning comedy into tragedy, they are also helping to speed up and fulfill the Final Holocaust a la Zechariah and Malachi, thus helping to make the Bible even more believable!
(For even more stunning information, visit MSN and type in “Separation of Raunch and State” and “Bible Verses Obama Avoids.”)

Letterman didn’t write the joke. He mentioned in an interview that he asked if it was the older daughter before using the joke. Hang the writer and leave Letterman alone.

You’re all a bunch of nutters. Everyone one of you. Right/ Left doesn’t matter. You’re all a bunch of hypocrites who’ve probably laughed at jokes far more offensive than that one.
