Richard Land Rebukes Abortion Provider Assassination

Posted on June 1, 2009 at 10:31 am

From the desk of the President of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission and all around religious rightist:

“If the perpetrator of this violence proves to be someone who was acting in the name of the pro-life movement, everyone in the pro-life community must swiftly and soundly repudiate him and his actions,” Land said.

“The murder of Dr. George Tiller is a human tragedy. Murdering someone is a grotesque and bizarre way to emphasize one’s commitment to the sanctity of human life. People who truly believe in the sanctity of human life believe in the sanctity of the lives of abortion providers as well as the unborn babies who are aborted.”

Well, I am actually impressed. Land made his statement, and he he did not have the uaual “comma, but…” at the end of it. By that, I mean, when these anti-abortion crazies do something like this, we often hear something like, “Well, killing that doctor was wrong, BUT you need to remember the war against abortion.” But Land, often so intemperate, has made a good solid statement here. Didn’t he also come out strong against torture, with no qualifications? Is something good going on with Richard Land?

A quick googling suggests that Souther Baptists support the death penalty. Are they rebuking this position, admitting abortion isn’t murder, or being cowards who think it’s fine to kill so long as they let the state do it for them?

Live by the sword; die by the sword. This man committed heinous crimes against 9 month old, unborn, alive, feeling, breathing baby — a human being. D and X abortion is when the doctor (?) cuts off the arms and legs, crushes the skull and removes the body after it has died a heinous death. I’m sorry that someone murdered him. I think he should have been tried for murder, convicted and spend the rest of his life in a cell. And his church was endorsing his abortion antics. Killing is wrong; whether it’s an abortion doctor or a 9 month old in the womb baby. Live by the sword; die by the sword. And he died the same type of death that he administered. Horrible!

It is always fascinating to read Richardl Land’s remarks in response to the religious issues of the day. In this case, it is obvious, his purpose is to divert any possible criticizms of his “pro life” position and come off appearing to be a law abiding citizen like most of the rest of us.

The real problem is, Dr. Tiller’s death is a direct result of the paranoia created by those who equate abortion with murder. It is not a time for them to respond, but to repent. That would be the proper Christian response.

Unfortunately, far too many of those who believe they are Christians have fallen into the trap set by the more radical elements of their faith, who refuse to acknowledge a truth, that most abortions are the direct result of poverty, either of the purse or of the passion aroused by an ignorance of the body’s potential to create life as we know it. The solution will never be found in the court room, nor the clinic, but in our grasp of the commandment to do unto others, as we would have done unto us.
