Breaking Down The Race For TNGOP Chair

Posted on May 17, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Humphrey does the honors on the race to replace Robin Smith:

At first blush, [Oscar] Brock may be the frontrunner. At least he says so, declaring that he already has commitments from 25 State Executive Committee (SEC) members. Thirty-four are needed for a majority.

As a member of the SEC, Brock is well known (and favorably so, for the most part) to the folks who make the decision.

[Chris] Devaney, in turn, presents the credentials of a professional political operative while [Rep. Eric] Swafford may be positioned to claim the backing of the party’s right wing.

If I am a Democrat the one I fear the most on this list is Devaney. He knows how to build and run an orgnization, raise money and he has DC connections. Oscar Brock’s best qualification is that his Daddy was Senator and Eric Swafford doesn’t have the chops to run the party.

Different people bring different energies, different skills, different histories that may or may not alienate people (further), but I can’t help but feel some of the fire will go out with Robin’s departure.

Thank goodness that Robin is gone. She had fire all right but took it upon herself to make decisions that didn’t reflect the republican voters of the state. I’m thinking Chris Devaney will bring back some respect to the TNGOP. We’ve lost that nationally as well as statewide. Anyone that is already a part of the machine will only make matters worse. So for me, GO Chris!

Swafford would not endorse Lankford for Congress, now he wants to run for Chairman?
