Cohen Reacts To Memphis Mayor’s Challenge

Posted on April 21, 2009 at 6:07 pm

Rep. Steve Cohen has issued this statement upon hearing the news that the Mayor of Memphis may challenge him for his congressional seat:

“I was surprised to learn of this announcement by the Mayor’s office just now while reading the Commercial Appeal as I have been contacted by neither the Mayor nor any of his associates. I have an excellent working relationship with the City of Memphis as evidenced by the number of projects that received federal funding under the last budget. I believe that the overwhelming margin of victory during my reelection campaign last year showed that the people of the 9th District of Tennessee enthusiastically approve of the job I’ve been doing in Washington, D.C. In my nearly thirty years of public service as a legislator, I have always fought for the people of Memphis, and I plan to continue to do so in the U.S. House of Representatives for the foreseeable future.”

Heh. Like Willie Herenton would want to deal with House Ethics or fill out a federal disclosure.

This from a man who submitted a resignation letter to the Council and basically held the office of Memphis Mayor hostage for a few days to see if he could get appointed back to his old job as Superintendent of Memphis City Schools, and when it became plainly clear that no one was going to let him bookend his public career with the same job he started in, he abruptly changed course, said that he had been misunderstood, and IIRC he actually got the city attorney to give an opinion that the letter he tendered was not technically a resignation letter. He now maintains that he never resigned, and just sort of expects everyone to forget it ever happened.

This is also not the first time he has floated this particular balloon. Nothing will come of this, and if there ever actually is a Cohen vs Herenton match up, the old man will wish he’d resigned last year. The man’s pushing 80, isn’t he? In any event, Cohen’s got that seat locked up for the foreseeable future. It would be close, but I don’t think Herenton could knock him out of place.

    A.C., on the other hand…

    Cohen isn’t going anywhere.

Memphis, you still have the craziest politics of any city I’ve seen!
