Two Years Of 287(g)
Posted on April 16, 2009 at 9:04 amThe Davidson County Sheriff has released a report on the result and progress of Nashville’s adoption of a federal program to identify and remove criminal illegal aliens from our city. From the report’s conclusion:
Partnering with the federal government has been the right move for Davidson County:
- 46 percent decline in percentage of illegal aliens committing crimes;
- 31 percent decline in the percentage of foreign born arrested – showing no
indication of profiling by arresting agencies;- 70 gang members removed from Davidson County
- 5,300 illegal aliens set for removal have more than 20,000 current and
previous charges;- 75 percent of vehicular homicides since inception of 287(g) would have been
prevented if misdemeanor offenders were removed previously;- 40 percent have been arrested previously;
Sheriff Daron Hall agrees that more should be done at the federal level such as enforcing the border. Additionally, he believes 287(g) is a public safety tool - not a solution to this country’s illegal immigration problem. Hall also supports recommendations made by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), the investigative arm of Congress, that the program needs more oversight and consistency across the board. In addition, he believes transparency is a necessary function for a program such as 287(g).
Over the past two years, there have been challenges; however, the DCSO has handled the implementation of 287(g) effectively and professionally and strives to operate a model program.

How in the hell can he know if there’s been a 46% decline in illegal aliens committing crimes? He only knows about the people his department catches and nothing at all about the immigration status of the people they don’t. If you phrased it another way, it would read “46% decline in the number of illegal aliens we prosecuted,” which would make the program look markedly less successful.
The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office does not “catch” anyone. It is not an arresting authority in Davidson County. It can’t be a “46 percent decline in the number of illegal aliens we prosecuted” because the DCSO wasn’t prosecuting anyone prior to this program…and, actually, still doesn’t. The federal government prosecutes illegal aliens the DCSO ICE deputies recommends for removal. Read the report at http://www.nashville-sheriff.net and it all may make more sense.
They do catch people in that if they didn’t check for immigration status most times they wouldn’t have a reason for holding anybody. Recent studies have shown that a big percentage of people held where stopped for non criminal offenses.
Remember that many of the illegal aliens arrested and then turned over to federal authorities under this program were driving vehicles when stopped and likely were committing some traffic violation at the time. Tennessee does not license illegal aliens to drive, so if these folks are driving, they are a serious public safety problem. If the aliens are removed from this country via 287(g), the life saved may be yours or your kid’s.
I wish Atlanta had had this law-enforcement/corrections cooperation back in 1999. My family might have been spared much grief, and my daughter might not be dealing with certain permanent problems.
I have a good sense of humor and, generally, I am slow to anger, but the memories of what I/we went through in that and another family tragedy mobilizes that emotion very quickly. Some of you who attack me or others on this issue come across as absolute fools.
TGG, I don’t know who you are, but I just want to say that you have done a consistently good job of speaking up for the sheriff’s office.
The problem is that many of the people were not driving, as in the case of a person arrested for seating in front of a laundromat drinking coffee without a license.
Tennessee does not license illegal aliens to drive, so if these folks are driving, they are a serious public safety problem.
Gee… You mean refusing to check potential drivers for some rudimentary skill level didn’t actually prevent them from driving?
I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but I am in total shock that right wingers were complete and total idiots on that one.
Wow! I typed that with a straight face! You’ll have to take my word on it. But really, I am getting so much better with the whole deadpan thing.
