Official: Ford Out Of Governor Race

Posted on April 13, 2009 at 1:37 pm

From the desk of Harold Ford, Jr.

After long thought, consultation and prayer with my wife, Emily, I’ve decided now is not the right time to re-enter elected politics. Therefore, I won’t be a candidate for Governor this year.

I want to personally thank the many across our state and country who urged me to run for Governor. There will be another race and time to ask for your support.

There is no way to adequately express my deep gratitude to those who share my passion for public service and, more importantly my strong desire to help our citizens through this trying economic time.

I also want to encourage my supporters to align with one of the other Democrats running. I urge our Democratic candidates running for Governor to organize your campaign around how to make Tennessee the most attractive 21st century economy of any state in the nation.

Of course, this is not at all surprising. Very few folks were still holding out hope of a run by Junior at this point. So does this change anything?

Are there any more candidates on the Democratic side who were waiting for the official no from Junior? Will this announcement cause some candidates to ramp up activity?

Or is it just status quo?

Status quo, though perhaps it could release a few donors who might’ve been waiting to see what Junior did.

Did anyone ever believe Junior was seriously planning to run?

Let’s see, Ford’s out, Lincoln Davis is out. Gordon, Tanner and Cooper won’t run. That leaves Dem’s with Ward Cammack, Kim McMillan and Roy Herron. Am I missing anyone?

What about Gary Odom. Does he have any steam left to run for Gov or does he hold on to that pipe dream of being majority leader.

Forget about a rematch with Corker in 2012.

Ford is settled in NY and will never return to Tennessee politics (apart from fundraisers).

    Smart personal choice.

He has a good career ahead of him as a broadcaster/pundant.
