TCPR Unearths Damaging Memo On Anna Belle Clement O’Brien
By Kleinheider Posted on April 3, 2009 at 1:35 pmFrom a presser:
On Monday, former State Senator Anna Belle Clement O’Brien is scheduled to receive the 2009 Humanitarian Leadership Award in a ceremony to be attended by Tennessee’s political elite. The Tennessee Center of Policy Research (TCPR) is releasing an FBI file today that raises questions about whether O’Brien should receive this distinguished award.
The sister of a Tennessee governor and the aunt of a U.S. Congressman, O’Brien is known to many as the “First Lady of Tennessee Politics.” O’Brien was the first woman to serve in the General Assembly as a committee chairwoman.
But according to FBI files obtained by TCPR through the Freedom of Information Act, O’Brien potentially deserves another title: corrupt.
UPDATE: Tom Humphrey calls out Drew Johnson for this “cheap shot.”

TCPR is nothing but a gaggle of character assassins. Given the fact that numerous public officials were convicted on corruption charges during Operation Rocky Top, do you not think that the FBI would have indicted O’Brien if they had believed these charges were true?
TCPR has zero credibility.
Dr. Jelly,
I don’t think that TCPR is asking for an indictment, Nor are they claimning they have evidence that would warrant one.
In this case, they seem to be asking that the Senator be vetted a bit more before she receives a distinguished award.
Vetted a bit more?
She’s 85-years-old for Christ’s sake … this is just that self-inflated little punk trying to draw attention again …
What a loser.
Come on, Trent, you used to play grab ass with that partisan hack over at TCPR. Aren’t you in Texas now?
If Drew were really interested in good government, he would criticize Ron Ramsey for wanting to rake in loads of campaign cash while he presides over the Senate session . . .
But Drew ain’t big on hitting Republicans, is he, Trent?
Come on, roll out some minor hit on a Republican that Drew has thrown out.
Dr. Jelly,
I guess I didn’t see this as partisan. Drew didn’t mention party in his presser.
Beyond that, however, a Republican is also implicated in the FBI memo in question. Drew also calls out that person in his press release. Please give the presser and the source document a good read.
And yes, I’m in Texas now. I suppose I picked the wrong day to take a day off and check out the latest in my former home.
TCPR ia a right-wing front for partisan attacks, a la the swift boaters. No one is going to pay any attention to this low-down trash from them.
Get real, Trent. Jim Henry has been out of politics for years. The conservative wing of the TNGOP doesn’t like him because he ran against Van Hilleary in 2002. Henry is exactly the type of Republican that TCPR throws into its releases on occasion so they can appear non-partisan.
Oh Jelly, Anna Belle “has been out of politics for years” too. Bet you feel silly. Love, Mag.
This from a file from the 1980s from a single source that was more than likely investigated and proven untrue because she was never indicted/charged/convicted. Nothing publicly has EVER even been mentioned about her being corrupt. Apparently the FBI heard about this, investigated, and found nothing was there.
He talks about “a possible bribery scheme looming”. How is a single memo from 1986 “looming”?
Does he even know who this woman is or anything about her or what she is about?
Now he’s beating up old women? I understand Al Gore makes himself a target, but this goes too far. Way to try to crap on an 85-year old woman’s career-crowning achievement.
Just because you can try to crap on someone, doesn’t mean you should.
For once, I’m with Dr. Jelly and TennRod. It is despicable to attack this public servant who has given her life to serving the people of Tennessee.
Hmm. Maybe Drew Johnson has more on sweet lil’ ol’ Anna Belle and is waiting to see all the chivalry from you gallant Tennessee government boys before he throws the big punch? What else is out there? That Drew Johnson sure gets under your skins! Love, Mag.
Quite possibly the most pathetic thing I have ever seen. This guy must be mentally ill to pull such a publicity stunt.
Good job Drew! Keep up the good work.
An unseemly and ungentlemanly attack on a distinguished woman in her mid-80’s is dispicable. This, my friends, is the depth to which the modern Republican Party and conservative movement have sunk.
Drew and Trent - A little lesson for you young hacks. If you are in and around public service your whole life, you will realize there will always be people trying to use your name to get something for themselves. That does not mean in ANY WAY that the public servant has any idea their name is being thrown around. The memo does not provide even a hint that she was aware of the supposed conversation; much less that she did anything to even warrant the slander of “corrupt” in your press release. She does more good for the citizens of TN before her morning coffee each day, even at age 85, than you two will ever do in your lifetime. By the way Drew, you continue to show your lack of ethical standards by putting out this type of trash.
Are you libs also sticking up for Kilby? Is he young enough to be considered still wrong? Wrong is wrong at 60 or 80.
If we’re talking about charges, how about the charge that Drew Johnson stalks women all over Nashville?
And he’s defended by a guy, Trent, that used to call himself “the most sought-after DUI in Nashville.”
Would TCPR like to address those charges?
Wow -
The Left sure likes to take the High Road when it’s one of theirs being pilloried. And they anonymously pull out ridiculous and debunked lies about people they disagree with. Next time someone makes the claim that the Left tends to take the approach of “personally smear your opponent while ignoring the issue” you might want to remember this thread. No evidence to refute the original memo except for one commenter who defends the lady by dismissing the memo because it was from the 1980s and didn’t result in a charge. As if Democratic Party Power in TN in the 80s might not have had a say in that result.
In short, you Lefties attack and smear but don’t address the content except to say leave an 85 year old woman her recognition because she’s old. By that logic you all should be building monuments to Reagan.
But you all continue to leave yourself open to charges of being partisan hacks. It’s not that the Right doesn’t have it’s corrupt politicians and pols. It’s just that when we find them, in the vast majority of cases, we turn them out in disgrace. But when you find them in your own party you venerate them. Your claims that Anna Belle, or any other Democrat, is deserving of respect would gain SO much more traction if you would actually discipline your bad guys.
Instead you elect them President, appoint them to Cabinet positions and give them the Navy’s highest civilian award. You’ll pardon me if I find your defense of Anna Belle lacking. She may indeed be totally innocent of any wrongdoing in this matter. But you all are so corrupt yourself when it comes to self-policing your own that I would never accept your telling me so.
