    It’s probably inevitable that someone will mistakenly take offense to the expression, but it would be nice if the backlash waited until then.

    Also, didn’t McCain apologize for using this same term? I think the Toni Morrison quote on wikipedia indicates that there’s some truth to the notion that the term has historically been misused by racists as a pejorative against black children, robbing all English speakers of a powerful literary metaphor for some challenges of dealing with the current financial crisis as well as other social problems.
