What Kind Of Democrat Is This?

Posted on February 25, 2009 at 10:34 am

David Lyons is not pleased with Governor Bredesen statements that he may end up refusing some federal stimulus money:

Gov. Bredesen is considering turning down $143 million from the federal stimulus package because, in giving another $25 per week to unemployed Tennesseans, he is afraid it might raise taxes on businesses later. Odd. I thought I voted for a Democrat. I thought government was supposed to help families in need.

Sadly the choice in Tennessee seems to be between not-crazy, kinda-crazy and Cuckoo-for-Cocoa-Puffs crazy conservatives. Even if they have a D by their name.

If anyone was looking for final, absolute, rock solid confirmation that Bredesen isn’t going to HHS - they just got it.

BrassAss wins the internet today! Although I’d take out “conservatives” and just apply it to everyone, I’d agree that our state’s politicians are an embarrassment

    Brass -

It’s great that your present such factual political commentary here. I know that Gary Odom, Jimmy Naifeh, Janis Sontany, Mary Pruitt and the like are all just as conservative as the day is long…

So, what kind of Democrat is Bredesen?

    A somewhat-fiscally responsible, hesitant-to-mortgage-our-grandchildren’s-future, kind-of-pro-business, middle-of-the-road Democrat. He never campaigned as a hyperpartisan Odom-style hack.

Matthew, I really wish I would’ve won the election for speaker so you could be working for me right now and I would not have to read your shitty blogposts.

Good luck on that job search.

Anybody remember that cover article about Bredesen in the New Republic in Jan. ‘05, claiming he was the new wunderkind of Dem politics and that he’d run for President in 2008?

Not that I’m blaming Tennessee Dem failures wholly, or even mostly, on Bredesen, but his lack of skill in political gamesmanship is just sort of sad. My guess is he ran as a Dem because there’s more competition among Republicans and he figured he’d have a chance to stand out in the Dem playing field. But even then, he almost couldn’t pull it out - were it not for a total of 50,000 votes in 2002, Uncle Phil would have been a sidenote in history.

It’s too bad he hasn’t been able to live up to the breathless promotion given him by the likes of Clay Risen what seems like an eternity ago. Seriously. Our state would be far better off.

Eleanor A - Are you saying we’d have been far better off under Van Hilleary? Please - Phil may have his weaknesses but Van wasn’t even in the same league - and 2002 was just about the high water mark for conservatism in this country.

I would say this is the sensible kind of Democrat.
