Openly Gay, Closet Republican?

Posted on February 19, 2009 at 7:17 am

District 18 Metro Council candidate David Glasgow tells Nate Rau that despite voting in three Republican primaries and working in government for Republican appointees, he is not a member of the GOP:

Glasgow said his decision to vote in Republican primaries was a strategic one so he could vote against a particular candidate. For instance, Glasgow said he was satisfied with either Obama or then Sen. Hillary Clinton in last year’s Democratic primary. So, he voted in the Republican primary to specifically vote against Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Voting records show Glasgow never voted in a Democratic primary.

Asked which party he would typically affiliate himself with, Glasgow described himself as a “progressive independent.”

Glasgow pointed out that one of his leading advisers is former Council member Betty Nixon, whom he considers a leading progressive voice in District 18.

“I don’t like being told by either party who I should vote for. So that’s why I have [to] consider myself an independent,” Glasgow said.

If he’s voted in more than one Republican primary then he’s Bona Fide.

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, its a duck! Sadly after the track record of Republicans on the council, I don’t think anyone will help elect Eric Crafton and Jim Gotto some more help.

He’s definitely Republican but where is his support in September of 2003 for David Briley, a diligent defender of gay rights and unqualified Democrat? And there are no votes in the local elections every 4 years where the only game in town when voting for sheriff and all those other court house offices is the democratic ballot. Yep, he’s an R.

David Glasgow is a republican and should know better. District 18 voters are a pretty smart bunch and we know our Democrats and people without character trying to act like one ONLY when its convenient. Compassionate conservatism doesn’t fly in this district and neither does progressive independence. Distrtict 18 is the name and Democrats are our game!

So if he voted against Huckabee…does that mean he voted for McCain?

I would swear this guy was a Bob Corker supporter and told several of us as much. That’s not the end of the world since many gays and lesbians were not happy with HFJ but at least own it. I’m not sure if my mind is failing me or if David’s is conveniently failing him?

I like the way he throws out Betty Nixon’s name - does she even live in his district? You know he is in troble when he uses her name to help salvage his reputation.

And she’s married to a Republican hack.

Hmmm, 8 anonymous screen names, but how many cowards are actually behind them? That’s always the question.

    Chris,
Didn’t your group endorse David a couple of days ago?

yes Chris’ group endorsed him. But never a mention of how Chris advises Glasgow. Truly shameful. Just because he’s gay he deserves the endorsement - and his party works against gay rights. Nice work TEP!

I am a member of TEP and I don’t care one way or another that TEP’s PAC endorsed Glasgow. While I am supporting a candidate that I find sufficiently more progressive than Glasgow (Kristine LaLonde), I think that party affiliation doesn’t need to be the focus of this campaign. It should be about what the person is going to do to represent the neighborhood. Personally, I could care less what party Glasgow is a member of, supports, or votes for. What matters is what he would stand for on the Council. If he really is a Republican, then I assume he would likely favor more business-oriented policies. If David Glasgow is a Republican, then he’s certainly a very progressive one, which I don’t really have a problem with. If he voted against Mike Huckabee, then that’s good in my opinion. If he voted for Ron Paul, John McCain, or Mitt Romney, so what? That’s his personal choice and he has the freedom to do it…just let him be.
