Shockingly Low Percentage Of Americans Believe In Evolution

Posted on February 12, 2009 at 12:06 pm

From Gallup:

On the eve of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth, a new Gallup Poll shows that only 39% of Americans say they “believe in the theory of evolution,” while a quarter say they do not believe in the theory, and another 36% don’t have an opinion either way. These attitudes are strongly related to education and, to an even greater degree, religiosity.

Religion aside, it could be because its just a bad theory that keeps getting worse at explaining things.

Two words for the non-believers: evolve.

Which is why all kinds of reputable scholarly work for which creationism is axiomatic is published and taught by actual scientists, right?

Buying into the whole culture war package makes people dumber.

Um, Ryan, you do know the difference between a hypothesis and a theory, yes? I’m excited to see how your personal opinions have become “generally accepted.” Please share some things not explained by the theory!

If you don’t believe in evolution, how are you supposed to be informed and therefore correct on other scientific certainties like the necessity for abortion rights, gay marriage and opposing global warming.

More like, creating vaccines against viral illnesses and treating genetic conditions.

Anyhow, witness the whole culture war package in action.

Homosexuality is genetic; thus if you believe in evolution it follows you must believe in homosexual marriage as a scientific fact.

And, everyone I know who does not believe in evolution also doesn’t believe in vaccines and genetric treatments.

I have a doctorate and my research has shown that there is no scientific basis for evolution. In fact, science specifically disproves it. It is little more than a religion that is based on unfounded faith.

    Link, please, RN.

Oh good grief! Please don’t tell me you all believe you sprung from a tadpole!

If evolution is true why do we still have apes? And why has evolution stopped? Why haven’t all the earth’s creatures including humans continued evolving. Why can’t I fly? Why don’t I have wings?

Evolution was based on fraudulant drawings passed off as science–where is that fossil record by the way? There isn’t one. If we come from tadpoles, then you don’t feel so bad for stomping out life and you can argue about when life begins as “in the moment of conception”.

God is bigger than that. (and better!)

If evolution is true why do we still have apes?

Because we didn’t evolve from apes. Humans and apes share a common ancestor. There is a less than 3% DNA difference between humans and chimpanzees, that can’t be explained away by coincidence.

And why has evolution stopped? Why haven’t all the earth’s creatures including humans continued evolving.

It hasn’t, unless you’ve been around for the last two million years and can verify it.

    Why can’t I fly? Why don’t I have wings?

Because you’re just not that special.

    Has evolution stopped? No.

Critters with shorter life cycles have more opportunity to transfer genetic content that includes changes that promote survival.

Viruses are a great example. Many viruses have mutated in such a way as to facilitate their spread between hosts. That’s why there is such concern about H5N1, which presently requires an intermediary species as a host. Many viral disease epidemics have resulted from the virus’ evolution to allow airborne passage between humans, and other viruses evolve slightly from year to year as the virus replicates. That’s why flu vaccines are changed annually.

For critters with longer life spans, and for those who have developed technology to survive and need less help from the genetic lottery (like us people), genetic change is far less of a factor in allowing us to survive to reproduction age.

There’s really no real scientific foothold left to disagree with evolution. 30minutes of research will show you all kinds of evidence.

The only “substantial” evidence non-believers offer is against the original hundred year old theory. It’s thousands of times more solid of a theory now.

    Do your research
