Carter County Republicans Unite

Posted on February 10, 2009 at 7:25 am

Speaker Kent Williams’ hometown paper rebukes TNGOP chair Robin Smith for kicking the Carter Countian out of the GOP:

[W]e do not think that Republicans in Memphis and Chattanooga, where Ms. Smith is from, should be meddling in Carter County politics. We may live in the mountains, but we aren’t ignorant. We are learned enough in politics to vote. We don’t need the bright out-spoken lawyer from Memphis nor the “blonde” saleswoman from Chattanooga to tell us how to vote, nor do we need them to select our candidates. My gosh, our ancestors were the first to settle in Tennessee. They formed the first independent government west of the Alleghenies. Long before there was a Tennessee or a Chattanooga or a Memphis, our folks were living here in the Watauga Settlement. They were busy building a community and forming a government. I don’t know if they were Republicans or Democrats, but it really doesn’t matter. They were daring, brave and they sure didn’t let the British tell them what to do.

Perhaps, Ms. Smith should know that when she kicks our representative out of the Republican Party, she has dealt a blow to every Williams voter in Carter County.

UPDATE: The editorial has been removed from the website of the Star but Joe Powell has salvaged the text for posterity.

i lived in Carter County briefly, and they indeed are some very, very independent-minded folk. what Smith has done has insured that Williams can have the state representative’s office for the county for as long as he wishes.

btw, the Star has taken down that editorial and now has one up instead calling Williams “foolish’ and is credited to the Jackson Sun newspaper.

    what the heck happened??

Being kicked out of the Republican Party these days should be considered an advantage.

Smith and other Republicans have no clue about the future for Republicans.

    It’s bleak.

It’s too bad they took it down, it’s a far better read than anything that’s come out of the Tennessean recently.

And Mr. Williams ‘dealt a blow’ to all the rest of the Republicans in the remaining 94 counties in Tennessee when he voted for himself for speaker and got elected with the sole help of the Democrat party.

This is not about “Carter County”. It is about trust. The GOP will pick up more seats next time so Carter county better enjoy their time in the Sun. Mr. Williams will probably get re-elected state rep, but he won’t be re-elected Speaker.

    Joe P.,
It’s the same editorial. The headliner was somehow divided into two lines, which makes it read weird. It’s the same one we have in our paper without the divided headline. Hope that helps.

To the Avenger: You actually think Jason Mumpower would have made even a decent Speaker? You must not know the man. If Mumpower keeps his seat it will be a miracle.

Rick: Jason Mumpower would have made an excellent Speaker. He understands the legislative process, understands the institutional history of the legislature and lead his party to the majority on election day.

He did not get involved in Williams’ primary as Williams alledges.

Why do you think he won’t keep his seat?
