Posted on February 3, 2009 at 4:00 pm

Politico’s Whiteboard has him listed as a potential fill-in of the disgraced Daschle:

REPLACING DASCHLE?: Potential replacements for Daschle include former Vermont Gov. and DNC Chair Howard Dean, Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber and Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.). (4:26 p.m.)

    Can we say “special election”…?

As long as he can keep his mouth shut about Wal-Mart shoppers…

    Can we say “special election”…?

Why would we say that? I believe we’d be saying, “Governor Wilder”.

    Told ya.

But, to be honest, it would be much more fun to have an HHS Secretary who might break into primal scream at any time.

It’s not exactly Jocelyn Elders, but almost as much fun.

    YYEEEEAAAAAHHHHRRRGGGG!!!

Maybe President Obama should consider Lani Guinier, Zoe Baird, or Kimba Wood. Their tax indiscretions now seem pretty tame, by comparison.

    Sean -

I’m not sure I understand the “Governor Wilder” reference, since the Wilder I’m thinking of is no longer in office.

However, the State Constitution has this to say:

Sec. 12. Vacancy in office of governor. —

In case of the removal of the Governor from office, or of his death, or resignation, the powers and duties of the office shall devolve on the Speaker of the Senate; and in case of the death, removal from office, or resignation of the Speaker of the Senate, the powers and duties of the office shall devolve on the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Hopefully that worked. Hmmm. Governor Ramsey, it is! I say go for it.

Yeah, I meant Governor Ramsey…my bad.

Hooboy, the Ramsey agenda: Guns for everybody and no gays settlin’ down.

  9. February 3rd, 2009 5:03 pm

    Actually BrassAss,

Ramsey’s position on firearms would look more like… allowing responsible gun owners to carry their firearms with them in the even a situation occurs where they are forced to use them.

I do enjoy your sense of humor, though.

So are you saying that BrassAss is dead-on in his assessment of Ramsey’s policy toward gays?

I say we give GLBT people guns and train them in self-defense. We’ll see just how “tough” all those drunk redneck gay-bashers are then.

Oh, and PLLEEASSE let Obama pick Jim Cooper!!!

We need him out of the Congress before he has a chance to fuck up health care reform just like he did in ‘94.

And besides, Nashville can do way better for its Representative. We need a bona fide progressive, not a corporate shill like Coop.

Morpheus, while it sounds good, just remember it gives the Coop the chance to screw up on an even larger stage. Primarying him just sounds SO much better.

    Sean,

    RE Gov. Wilder…

    Old habits die hard, huh?

    Morpheus,

Nashville may want him out of Congress (or not), but we don’t necessarily want him at HHS. I’m thinking like Ambassador to Uzbekistan or something.

Secondly, do you guys have a real progressive standing at ready to run for and win his seat? And then someone to run for that person’s seat when they win?

    Just wondering…

Governor Bredesen would be an excellent choice for HHS Secretary. He has the executive experience and political astuteness to serve. The country would be well served by having Phil as its health care czar.

    Gov Bredesen as HHS secretary…

Let us remember “Medicaid is socialist medicine and must end,” Bredesen. “I’m not cutting there services they can go to the nursing home for help,” Bredesen.

just two important statements that run counter to the HHS, and the administration. Not to mention while Governor he is responsible for having the longest sit in, inside a State Capitol , in U.S. history and refused to negotiate, instead tried intimidation. Some of the intimidation tactics still linger. Oh yeah, I’ve heard the scream too.

Oh, and one more thing, when advocates expressed concerns about, and later documented, that people would die if their TennCare was cut Gov B scoffed and said we were just trouble makers.

Jim Cooper is probably one of the most intelligent
men in Congress and certainly one of the best
educated with his scholastic career ending
at Oxford. He speaks the truth and that was the
problem with his health care stance during the
Clinton adminstration. He, with candor, questioned
some of Mrs. Clinton’s views and that caused the
fur to fly. Be glad we have him and not one
    of our usual inept representatives.
