President Bush commutes the sentences but does not pardon two border patrol agents in jail for shooting a Mexican drug runner.

On his last full day in office, President Bush commuted the sentences of two former Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a Mexican drug runner in 2005.

The imprisonment of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean had sparked outcry from critics who said the two were just doing their jobs. They had been sentenced to 11- and 12-year sentences, respectively.

    The new Congress and the new administration should get together immediately and restore these two heros to their former status, but with full restitution of all pay and benefits lost and with promotions and with provisions for the paid education of any children and with a formal apology from their government.
