Why The Constitutional Officer Elections Went So Smooth

Posted on January 16, 2009 at 11:18 am

Democrats were given the order to stand down and let it happen:

In the Democratic caucus preceding the vote, Minority Leader Gary Odom confirmed the inevitable election of the Republican officers, cautioning his Democratic colleagues against contentious statements on the House floor. Odom told caucus members that the jobs of veteran staff members were at stake.

Republican Justin P. Wilson, following his election as comptroller, said that he had no intention of immediately replacing staff. The immediate past comptroller, John Morgan, has promised his assistance in the transition to Wilson. Whether current staff will be retained in other constitutional offices is still unclear.

I guess the plan to offer Chairmanships to those who voted for the Democratic candidates didn’t work out, did it Gary? Too bad.

I suspect Wilson and Hargett have worked with the people in those offices and know what a fine job they do, which may result in less turnover than Republican insiders had hoped.

I’m not really hoping for turnover at all. Most of the employees in any one of these offices are just part of the bureacracy. By and large, they’re not partisan in their nature, and I think most level-headed individuals would agree. Where I don’t necessarily want people who’ve been there under a Democrat Administration is in higher-level positions, which exude a certain level of policy influence.

From my understanding, Mumpower was conducting interviews for research analysts, attorneys, etc. whose expertise (especially research analysts) would require a more partisan attitude. Analysts are like lobbyists, in that they present the pros and cons and do the leg work for bills and things.

Now, that being said - and it’s been said already - I wonder if Obama will fire all of Bush’s U.S. Attorneys… and whether or not that will be as big of a scandal as Bush firing Attorneys at will.

Do you now for how much turnover Republican insiders had hoped?

All of it. They were unemployed Republicans filling the hallways all week.

In this economy, you’d better value your job more than being a mole. The GOP will have a larger majority before long.
