Hurry Up And Vote

Posted on January 14, 2009 at 4:55 pm

The TNGOP wants a vote on the constitutional officers before Gary Odom thinks up anymore shenanigans:

The Tennessee Republican Party calls on the new leadership of the state House of Representatives to move swiftly to a vote on the appointment of the state’s three constitutional officers.

The constitutional officers - Secretary of State, Comptroller and Treasurer - are to be elected by the legislature meeting in joint session. The state Senate has already approved the resolution required to meet in joint session with the House but the House, under the leadership of Kent Williams, newly installed as House Speaker by Democrats former Speaker Jimmy Naifeh and House Minority Leader Gary Odom, has not put such a resolution on its agenda. There is no good reason for such a delay.

“Tennessee is in perilous times, facing serious economic, budgetary and other challenges, and yet Speaker Williams is dithering on scheduling a vote on who will fill these very important offices. His delay, likely at the behest of Democrat leaders, is bad for Tennessee and a bad start to his already-controversial speakership,” said Bill Hobbs, communications director for the Tennessee Republican Party. “At a time when Tennessee needs competent leadership from its legislature, Williams is instead playing politics with these important jobs in order to please his new political benefactors on the Democratic side of the aisle.”

Word around the Capitol is Odom is scrambling to take credit for all of this when it was really John Litz who put together the deal and Mike Turner who held the Dem caucus together. In the words of Jack Nicholson in The Departed: “Just give (Gary) a whiff of my ass and the next thing you know he’ll crawl right in it.”

The fact of the matter is Odom hand a large hand in this election, as well as Naifeh and Turner. I think this serves warning to Republicans that if Naifeh and Odom can play nice and work together, the House dems can remain a force to be reckoned with.

“If” Naifeh and Odom can play nice? I submit that they have been playing nice all along. The House Dems have known that they were playing on the margins for several years, and they have fostered this illusion that there was trouble in paradise.

So much of the alleged dissent and hatred between Odom and the Puppetmaster has been an act. It’s a diversion meant to take the eyes of you, the media, and most importantly the hapless Republican, off the ball.

In the hours leading up to the execution of the Democrat’s dastardly plan on Tuesday, members of the Donkey Caucus and their useful idiots in the lobbying corps were feeding giddy Republicans with rumors that up to three Dems were considering voting for Mumpower. Gosh, those closed-door Dem Caucus meetings were all about whipping rumored dissenter Curt Cobb and others into compliance with the moribund speakership of Jimmy Naifeh.

That was a lie, and so is whatever dissent is rumored to exist between Naifeh and Odom. They are as snug as two bugs in a rug.
