You Only Get One Shot?

Posted on January 13, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Now, like or not, if trends continue the way they have been electorally in this state, in 2010 we will likely be looking at an increased Republican majority in the state House.

The question is: Will Jason Mumpower be the next Republican speaker or does his failure to solidify Williams mean that Jason Mumpower will likely not be the Republican nominee next time around?

Williams will be blamed for being a traitor, sure. But will Mumpower also be blamed for failing to see this potential break and take steps to block it?

Discuss.

I don’t see how anyone could blame Munpower. From what I heard, Williams said he was not only going to vote for a Republican, but it would be Munpower. If anything, I think it solidifies him as someone who “was wronged” among the party faithful.

What? Are you serious? And the media asked Sarah Palin too many tough questions too huh? Mumpower lost this because he keep talking about the use of the Republican absolute power block that was on the rise. Mumpower didn’t even know that it is ILLEGAL to suspend the nomination of another candidate before a vote.

I would have to agree with that sentiment. Pretty every Republican with any gumption in the House gets whacked by the Naifeh crowd at some point in some way. Many time over for some. He’s just another in a very long line. Badge of honor.

Still, two years is a long time. There’s a lot of cross-carrying that will be going on.

FWIW, I think Mumpower and the TNGOP “powers that be” are suffering from the same kind of self-important hubris that became the downfall of the national GOP.

This whole “purity” movement, marching in lockstep, no dissent allowed, is not in the spirit of democracy. For the same reasons that Lamar Alexander thinks that “Right to Work” is a good idea in union/labor policy, I think it’s a good thing that SOMEBODY (Williams) took a stand against this crap.

It reminds me of Jim Jeffords, the GOP pariah from Vermont who defected to “independent” status in 2001:

Odds are Mumpower is toast. There are too many ambitious members of the House Republican Caucus. Internally, he’ll be blamed for blowing the speaker’s race. I’d say there’s even a shot that he won’t finish this General Assembly as GOP leader. Casada’s ass could be in a sling, too. He and Mumpower recruited and supported a primarly opponent against Williams, and ain’t paybacks hell, boys? There will be major ramifications within the caucus because of this vote.

I dont think Republicans will increase any majority. They won this year based on extraordinary backlash on Obama. That wont be the case in 2010. Democrats will take back the house.
