Kent Williams Didn’t Violate The Pledge

Posted on January 13, 2009 at 2:18 pm

Robin Smith and the gang can say what they like but “the pledge”, what the Republican members of the House of Representatives signed, did not say anything about voting for the Republican caucus nominee, only a Republican for Speaker of the House:

Together, as members of the House Republican Caucus, we are proud to announce our unified commitment to vote for a Republican for Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives. We also commit to vote for a Republican Speaker Pro Tempore.

Kent Williams did not violate his oath.

UPDATE: Kent Williams in November on the vote for Speaker:

“I want to state today, unequivocally, that I pledge to vote for a Republican for Speaker of the House. I have every reason to expect that the Republican nominee will be Leader Jason Mumpower.

“We are grateful that the people of Tennessee have given us the opportunity to lead. We will make them proud.”

UPDATE II:
Williams violates pledge by voting for Democratic Speaker Pro Temp.

Sounds like Clintonesque logic to me.

It may be true that he voted for a Republican (himself) for Speaker, but he didn’t vote for collective Republican caucus choice.

This is a good lesson for me as a law student. Make sure there are no possible ambiguities in the contract before you sign it.

    “Politics ain’t beanbag.”

That headline of that Chattanoogan story doesn’t actually represent what Kent Williams said.

    Here’s what he said:

“I want to state today, unequivocally, that I pledge to vote for a Republican for Speaker of the House. I have every reason to expect that the Republican nominee will be Leader Jason Mumpower.”

So he did fulfill his pledge, but a reason came up for him to not expect that the only Republican nominee would be Mumpower.

It’s all Roberts rules fault…LOL! I bet that Jason would like to kick Roberts butt if he could find him.

He did just violate his pledge.

Goes to show that these pseudo-legal “pledges” (like the anti-tax pledge) are all BS. The best way to guarantee your votes is to be liked by those whom you hope to have vote for you. Ramsey learned this with Mike Williams, and now Mumpower’s learned it (with greater consequences) with Kent Williams.

Actually, he now did officially violate the pledge by voting for a Democrat, Lois DeBerry, for Speaker Pro Temp.

If you read the pledge, Adam, it includes voting for a Republican for Speaker Pro Tem.
