Former Clement Hand Rebukes English Only
Posted on January 8, 2009 at 4:50 pmVia press release:
John Ray Clemmons, a candidate for the Metro Council in the 18th District, today announced his opposition to the so-called “English Only” amendment to the Metropolitan Charter.
“I am flatly opposed to the so-called ‘English Only’ amendment, and I hope that the people of Nashville will defeat it at the polls,” Clemmons said. “This is bad public policy, pure and simple.”
Clemmons said he is campaigning actively against the amendment even as he begins his own campaign for the Metro Council.
“I believe people of good conscience should stand against this amendment to the Metro Charter,” Clemmons said. “I believe the so-called ‘English-Only’ amendment will be bad for Nashville, bad for our schools, bad for our economy and give us an undeserved black eye nationally and internationally.”
Clemmons said that as he campaigns on his own behalf he is speaking out against the English Only charter amendment as well as a second amendment to the Metro Charter that would make it “ridiculously easy” to change the Metro Charter via referendum.
“Nashville is a place where the voice of the people is heard through a large and diverse Metro Council. We don’t need a series of expensive public referenda on divisive issues driven by a small and vocal minority.”
Clemmons added, “I believe anyone who is serious about providing progressive leadership to our community should stand in opposition to these charter amendments, and I encourage all of my opponents to join me in publicly stating their positions.”
Clemmons has made a personal contribution to Nashville for All of Us and voted early against this ‘English Only’ amendment.
