Mike McWherter Looking At A Governor’s Race As Well
By Kleinheider Posted on January 7, 2009 at 6:57 amThe man whose lollygagging prevented the Democratic Party from mounting a proper challenge to Lamar Alexander in 2008 is looking at a run for Governor:
Mike McWherter, son of former Gov. Ned McWherter, said he has been “talking with some friends and some family about what my future options might be. I’ve expressed some interest there.”
Mr. McWherter, 52, said he wants to “make sure I have the resources in place” to run. But the chairman of Union City-based First State Bank and owner of two beer distributorships said he would be prepared to engage in some self-financing as well.

Sorry, Mike, I will work hard to beat you, because royalism is the worst disease of human states.
Being an ex-governor’s son should not disqualify Mike McWherter. Let him stand or fall on his ideas, his record, and the content of his own character.
I get the impression McWherter is not the candidate the Republicans want to select for the Democrats.
I agree that it shouldn’t disqualify him but it shouldn’t bump him to the head of the line either. Tennessee has a problem with nepotism at every level of government so it behooves Mike McWherter to show that he deserves our support based on his own merits. Being rich or being the son of someone important/famous aren’t qualifications for office.
What has young McWherter done besides sell beer? I really don’t know much about him. Heard his dad was effective and spent years in legislature. Moved to East TN 10 years ago with manufacturing. and am interested in who’s elected.
I believe that one learns the most from their parents. In this case Mr. McWherter is the decendent of a former governor who led this state for 8 of its most prosperous years, and without scandal. Ned Ray was probably the most decent and morally strong leader we’ve had in the past 50 years. The fact that his son is a sucessful business man makes him even more appealing as a leader during this most difficult economic time.
Between Mike McWherter and Roy Herron, who will say “Ned McWherter” more often on the campaign trail?
That’s all either will have to run on. Either “Ned McWherter is my daddy” or “I’m from Ned McWherter’s hometown.”
Neither of these two are anything close to Ned McWherter and both are just running for governor as a career move, not because they care about the state.
Sounds like a Republican from East Tn will be our next governor and that’s not so bad. I just can’t get excited about someone who says he saw his daddy govern so he knows how. Son your father by all accounts worked his way up the ladder and was a popular official. Some things you can’t inherit.
