Mr. Keynote Speaker

Posted on January 31, 2009 at 6:35 pm

Richard Spencer points out that an old joke will now need an update:

There’s an old joke that goes, “Whatdaya call the only black person—er, excuse me, African- American—at an official Republican gathering.” The punch line—“Mr. Keynote Speaker.” I guess we can now change that to “Mr. Chairman of the Republican National Committee.”

Every Group

Senator Bill Frist shares his congratulations to the new RNC chair:

I want to extend my personal congratulations to Michael Steele on his election as Republican National Committee Chairman. Michael is an excellent choice for RNC Chair and I look forward to working with him to return our Party to the majority in every aspect of government. Michael Steele said that he will expand the reach of the Party by competing for every group, everywhere. That must be the ongoing philosophy of the Republican Party. Our message must reach every person in this country. We must encourage the American people to become involved in the grassroots efforts of the Republican Party. We know that the Republican core principles remain the principles of the majority of Americans. Now we must work with Michael Steele to communicate our message across the country.

Sir, I Believe You Have My Stapler

Rep. Stacey Campfield has a large type beef with the new speaker and how he is managing the three week transition period allotted to get the new legislature organized:

Kent, being unprepared to lead, has finally realized some Republicans have replaced Democrats (I know, it is a shock). He waited until the last minute to think about office assignments and is just now realizing the Dems don’t want to share offices with Republicans and they don’t want any Republicans in the legislative plaza.

Where to put all the new Republicans? Just cram more Republicans into fewer, smaller offices and start shifting who goes where. Instead of a smooth timely transition over a few weeks like the senate had, many house Republican offices are now in a mad last minute scramble to move. Temporary walls and cubicle spaces are being thrown up, staff is running around trying to box up everything, move it to different offices, unpack it and be ready before session starts.

Of course the now smaller Democrat caucus has more office space, more staff, less responsibility and better pay then ever before and the now larger Republican caucus has less.

The J-Train To Comptroller Town

Posted on at 11:17 pm

Theo Emery reports on the monies Justin Wilson transferred to GOP lawmakers in the leadup to his election as state Comptroller:

And one contribution appears to signal that Wilson’s election was a foregone conclusion. While most of his fourth-quarter donations list Wilson’s occupation as attorney, a $500 gift he made on Jan. 12 to an incoming GOP lawmaker records his occupation as state comptroller, even though the election was days away.

A Gentleman And A Texter

Rep. Susan Lynn defends the actions of Rep. Brian Kelsey:

On a side note, I did speak with Rep. Susan Lynn yesterday. She was back at work, doing well and looking forward to moving past this entire ordeal. I spoke with her well before this whole text message thing came out, but she did defend Kelsey against criticism that he caused her hospitalization. She said that was simply not true and called him a “true gentleman”.

Tre Will Brook No Thompson

Posted on at 7:29 pm

The new Secretary of State is looking to make a few changes:

New Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett, a former Bartlett resident, said he is interviewing candidates to replace State Elections Coordinator Brook Thompson.

The new combined Republican majority in the Tennessee House and Senate earlier last month elected Hargett to replace Democrat Riley Darnell as secretary of state.

The secretary of state’s responsibilities include overseeing businesses, charities and elections.

Thompson has agreed to stay on as elections coordinator until his replacement is hired.

The Republican majority in the General Assembly is also causing a restructuring of the state’s 95 county elections commissions. Under state law, the majority party in the Legislature gets three representatives on those panels, while the minority party gets two.

TNGOP Like The Taste Of Steele

From the Chairman:

“Michael Steele’s election today as Chairman of the Republican National Committee brings fresh leadership and a welcome new toughness to the party as it tackles the challenge of rebuilding a Republican majority in Congress and also at the state level all across America,” said Robin Smith, Chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party.

Stimulating Discussion

Posted on at 3:21 pm

Dr. Martin Kennedy has the con:

Sounds radical these days but it is a worthy question; should the government actively manage the economy? Economists are dueling over the efficacy of a fiscal stimulus and the range of expert opinion is great. Essentially those who are dubious of the power and wisdom of active fiscal policy are humble when it comes to understanding precisely the cause and the solution. Or, they, and I include myself in this group, see the solution as being beyond the reach of government. Perhaps one way to look at it is to say that a fiscal stimulus is an attempt to treat the symptoms of the recession - an attempt to stimulate consumption via borrowing when it was exactly that which contributed to the downturn. It would be better to focus on the things that led to the bubble in housing prices, better to stabilize prices, to prevent a deflation. The role of government should be to provide security, public goods, and to facilitate the smooth functioning of markets.

Sheriff Daron Hall Spoke To The Council Of Conservative Citizens

Posted on at 2:49 pm

Dude, seriously. Have you not read a news article in the past ten years?

Maybe in 1999 you could have claimed ignorance, not in 2009.

Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall was a featured speaker for a nationalist white hate group that condemns blacks, immigration and is in favor of preserving the country’s “cultural and racial integrity.”

Hall spoke about his department’s controversial 287(g) federal immigration program at a Nov. 22 dinner of the Council of Conservative Citizens held at the Piccadilly Cafeteria on Murfreesboro Pike in Nashville.

The Council of Conservative Citizens opposes “mixing of the races,” homosexuality and nonwhite immigration — legal and illegal, according to its statement of principles on its Web site. The St. Louis-based group stems from the the racist, anti-integrationist White Citizens’ Councils of the 1950s and 1960s, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

Ramsey Factory: Lt. Governor Named Chair Of National Org

Posted on at 2:25 pm

From a presser:

(Nashville) – The Republican Lieutenant Governors Association has named Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey (R-Blountville) Chairman of the organization. He will lead the association’s strategic and fundraising efforts nationwide to elect more Republican Lieutenant Governors.

“I am honored that my colleagues have asked me to serve as Chairman of the RLGA,” Lt. Governor Ramsey said. “I look forward to sharing the success we have had in Tennessee and working to elect more Republican Lieutenant Governors across the nation in the years to come.”

The Republican Lieutenant Governors Association (RLGA) was formed in 2004 with the mission of electing more Republican Lieutenant Governors nationwide. Since then, Lt. Governor Ramsey claimed the office in Tennessee for the first time since Reconstruction and a Republican was elected Lieutenant Governor in Georgia for the first time in history. These victories follow successful campaigns in Nevada, South Carolina, Virginia and Texas. With these accomplishments, Republicans now claim 20 of the 43 Lieutenant Governor offices nationwide.

Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey represents Tennessee Senate District 2, which encompasses Johnson and Sullivan counties in northeast Tennessee. He was elected Speaker of the Senate and Lieutenant Governor in January 2007, the first Republican to hold the office in 140 years. Lt. Governor Ramsey is a real estate broker, auctioneer and owner of Ron Ramsey and Associates, located in Blountville.

New City Manager In Oak Hill

Posted on at 2:05 pm

From the Gazette and the website:

Kevin Helms, who has 12 years’ experience managing two Tennessee cities, was named City Manager of the City of Oak Hill by the Board of Commissioners at a special meeting January 29.

Vice Mayor Austin McMullen made the motion to hire Helms. He made reference to his similar motion at the January 15 meeting, which did not receive a second. At that meeting he said Helms was very well qualified, takes his job seriously, and works to achieve effective, efficient city government. Mayor Alsup seconded the motion which passed 2-0 with Commissioner Raymond T. Throckmorton abstaining.

Helms said he is looking forward into getting into the office on a full time basis beginning February 9 and meeting the residents.

“I think Oak Hill is a wonderful community with many opportunities,” he said. “With the turmoil the city and its residents have endured the past few months, I will work hard to unify all components and build a team as we move forward.”

Helms, the current president of the Tennessee City Management Association, previously worked for the cities of Fayetteville and Clifton.

“Kevin Helms was highly recommended by his peers in our area,” Mayor Tommy Alsup said. “We are fortunate someone with his impeccable credentials was available to be the 12th city manager of Oak Hill.”

Incumbent Bows Out Of RNC Race

Posted on at 1:37 pm

From Jim Geraghty:

It is not unthinkable that the race could come down to Dawson and Steele, and there are already murmurs of, ‘Can you imagine how the MSM’s coverage will be if the guy who was in the country club with a whites-only charter beats an African-American on the final ballot?’

UPDATE: Fourth ballot results.

Corker Doesn’t Bang

Senator Corker’s spokesman says her boss did not accept any invitation to any gang:

“As I’ve told Fox, we were invited late yesterday to a meeting in Sen. Ben Nelson’s office and were surprised to learn by reading the news this morning that by accepting the invitation we had joined a gang. That’s not accurate and we did not attend the meeting.”

Lying On Lyle

Posted on at 1:14 pm

From the AP:

A Nashville judge has uncovered bogus invitations that say she’s sponsoring a fundraiser for a scholar whose stance on Palestinian issues and friendship with President Barack Obama have raised questions.

Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle says she found out Thursday that invitations sent in her name announce a Feb. 12 lecture by Rashid Khalidi at the First Amendment Center in Nashville.

Lyle has asked the FBI to investigate. FBI officials didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
