RNC Chair Piles On Saltsman

Posted on December 27, 2008 at 3:17 pm

The man Chip Saltsman is trying to dethrone as chairman of the Republican National committee has added his voice to those denouncing the former RNC chair for including a racially inflammatory piece of political satire in his Christmas present to executive committee members:

“The 2008 election was a wake-up call for Republicans to reach out and bring more people into our party. I am shocked and appalled that anyone would think this is appropriate as it clearly does not move us in the right direction.”

However, Ken Blackwell, another candidate for chair and an African American, defends Saltsman:

“Unfortunately, there is hypersensitivity in the press regarding matters of race. This is in large measure due to President-Elect Obama being the first African-American elected president. I don’t think any of the concerns that have been expressed in the media about any of the other candidates for RNC chairman should disqualify them. When looked at in the proper context, these concerns are minimal. All of my competitors for this leadership post are fine people.”

UPDATE 3:53PM: Saltsman responds:

“Liberal Democrats and their allies in the media didn’t utter a word about David Ehrenstein’s irresponsible column in the Los Angeles Times last March. But now, of course, they’re shocked and appalled by its parody on the Rush Limbaugh Show.

“I firmly believe that we must welcome all Americans into our party and that the road to Republican resurgence begins with unity, not division. But I know that our party leaders should stand up against the media’s double standards and refuse to pander to their desire for scandal.”

Question: For Democrats, which is the “race card” in a standard deck of 52?

Answer: It’s a trick question. All 52 cards are, in fact, “race cards.”

Since when is it the RNC’s job to help boost the DNC/government-run media’s Messiah campaign?

Typical of Tennessee conservatives to think their backwater mentality is somehow representative of the mood in the rest of the country, instead of realizing themselves to be the political dinosaurs they truly are.

Mr. Blackwell was being far more charitable to scribblers than they deserve. Race-hypersensistivity in the press long predates Obama’s election to President. It long predates Jesse Jackson’s run for President. The press has been full of phony race-sensitivity and faux-outrage since it signed up as the media arm of the McGovernite democrats.

The time has come for the press to climb down from its self-rightous race sensitivities. Save the outrage for such things as joining Bill Cosby in condemning the behaviors that have left Jesse Jackson admitting that he fears being followed by black youths when walking alone at night in certain Washington, D.C. neighborhoods. Press whining and finger-waggling at harmless jokes became certified as out-of-style when President-elect Obama referred to himself as a “mutt.” So there.

Time will tell if the “mutt” really thinks of himself as that, or just another tax and spend democrat in the mold of FDR and his followers.

What does this have to do with someone running for national party chair and his song?

    What’s a real black person?

Saltsman dug his grave. TN GOPers can stick their heads in the sand and acknowledge that the Hobbs style is almost universally held to be crude, ungenteel, and divisive, or aim for being the last redoubt of nasty hate politics.

It’s interesting somebody leaked a Christmas gift to the press.

It’s interesting the press picked out that one song from a list of 41 to run in their headlines.

It’s interesting that one song was based on actual stories, not something that evil GOP racists made up.

It’s interesting the NY Times Caucus Blog didn’t even bother to mention the origin of the song.

It’s interesting that Howard Dean said much more divisive things involving race as the actual Chairman of the DNC without similar outrage from the left.

This is why holidays are good. You don’t read as much so you can answer so many comments in one shot.

    1. Mike who? Oh yeah, Duncan. Effective leader there.

    2. Democrats even play Uno with race cards.

    3. Bealie-o, you keep forgetting those dinosaurs WON in Tennessee. Someone must be doing something right. If you don’t like it, follow NITgirl to California. And please, you’re the same toolbox who put quotations around Doctor in Bill Frist’s title. Agree or disagree with the politics, the man is a world renowned surgeon. So we’re not too concerned with your prescription for Republicans. Get over yourself.

    4. DG, see above. The meanie un-genteel types (and when did we ever call Jimmy Nafieh “genteel”?) WON this year. It might just be they knew something national Republicans didn’t.

He uses the same old tired, intellectually dishonest, totally discredited foolish nonsense that you come to expect from these right wing nitwits. First is the tried-and-true, “Well, what about…?” Every time some Republican, racist hack like Saltsman gets called out, they find some Democrat or liberal somewhere that might have done something along the same lines (in this case, some columnist I never heard of wo wrote something last March; they have bee known to go back 35 ears for this truly lame technique). The idea for them is that if someone they don;t like did something bad, it make whatever they do OK. Come on, hp, is this the best defense you have. Some obscure newspaper column from nine months ago? Tis excuses you? This makes all criticism of you invalid? I know this is a favorite tactic of the dittohead morons, and Limbaugh uses it a lot, but come on. No one with a mind sees this as anything but lame.

Ten there is another favorite dittohead moron tactic. Blame “the media”! How original, Chip. “The media” actually forced you to include a racist ditty on your Merry Christmas CD. Of course Jesus would be happy to talk about “magic negroes”, wouldn’ he? It’s just “the media” to blame. If they would just be “fair and balancd” and only report good things about Republicans and only bad things about Democrats, you wouldn’t e in trouble would you, Chip? “The media” actually forced you to put that song on your CD, didn’t they? You have no responsibility for your actions at all, do you Chip? It’s all the fault of the media.” If they jus wouldn’t say bad things about you, no one would know what a jerk you are. It’s their fault. Wah, wah, wah.

You are done, Chip. Put a fork in yourself. Come back to Tennessee, one of the few remaining redneck-racist infested backwaters. Help Hobbs race bait the GOP into power here in Tennessee, because the rest of the country and the rest of the Western world is leaving you far behind. You are out of step, on the losing side of history, part of a disgraceful past that is heaving out its last gasps and thinking that winning a one vote majority in the state legislatre is some sort of overwhelming mandate. Watch Obama take his oath of office in front of the increased Democratic majority in Congress from Tennessee, Chip. Plunge your head into the sand. Nod mindlessly at the minute-by-minute dishonesty of Gill and Valentine. Pretend you are not in a small and dwindling minority of racist zealots. Come home, Chip. Come home to the land of Mumppwer and Hobbs and Robin Smith. Join your fellow last-ditch reactionaries. Because yo have no hope of being chairman of the GOP, but you can certainly shake your fist at history with the rest of the bitter angry losers.

Chippy Saltsman has published a detailed, multi-page, 3,644-word “Plan for Republican Victory” on his RNC campaign website at http://www.chipsaltsman.com in which he describes his “plan to execute a campaign for Republicans to recapture leadership on the American political scene.”

Chippy’s Plan includes eleven LONG paragraphs about how the RNC might reach out to Latino and young voters – but NOT ONE WORD about black voters or reaching out to them.

Last week Chippy completed a questionnaire sent to all RNC executive director candidates, posted at the link below, where he proudly declares, “By action and deed, we must convince minority voters to trust the Republican Party again.”

    http://townhall.com/blog/g/08543e5b-9fbe-4253-b05d-d7d8fd1011eb

SO - what action and deed do we see? Chippy Saltsman sends and defends an ugly, vulgar CD filled with what he calls “light-hearted” satire ridiculing blacks, Latinos, and minority voters. Hmm.

Message to RNC committee members – Chippy Saltsman thinks this CD will help win him your support.

And the Three Wise Men — Frist, Huckabee, and Mumpower – have continued to allow their ringing endorsements of Chippy Saltsman to be posted on his website and have spoken NOT ONE WORD of criticism for the past 72 hours.

Frist, Huckabee, and Mumpower are remaining silently supportive of Chippy and his Plan for Republican Victory, with its glaring omission of any reference to black voters.

Prediction: Their silence will come back to haunt the Three Wise Guys.

By the way, in answer to MightyMightyMitzu’s claim that “Chip proofreads,” I offer the following lead sentence from Section III of Chippy Saltsman’s “Plan for Republican Victory”:

III. Invest in New Technologies To Reinvigorate Party Efforts

If the 2008 political technology race had been an election, it would be been an absolute landslide.

There are few things in life funnier than seeing Republicans talk about minority outreach and recruitment, when in truth the current form of it built itself by appealing to Southerners fleeing the Democratic party because we had the audacity to support civil rights.

Strom thurmond was the poster child for what the GOP has become, and was the symbol for their transformation from the party of Lincoln to the party of jefferson Davis, and why they are meaningless outside the South. Saltsman was just playing to his base, folks, they love this stuff.

LWC et. al., if the CD had been a collection of racist songs and rants I’d agree with you, but it seems to have been a collection of Paul Shanklin’s parodies, one of which was “Barak the Magic Negro,” a parody not of then Sen. Obama, but of LAT columnist David Ehrenstein and the chorus of crickets that his offensive choice of language drew from the usually eternally offended. But far be it from me to try and use an objective view of the facts to interrupt and question your preconceived two-dimensional view of Republicans, conservatives and Southerners.
