Don’t Bet The Publishing Rights On It

Posted on December 10, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Brad Schmitt reports that, contrary to the New Republic, Tim McGraw has no plans to run for Tennessee Givernor — at least not in 2010:

Tim’s camp has no comment on the report.

But I’m told that a 2010 run ain’t gonna happen. Tim’s political aspirations are there, but he likely won’t act on them for years and years to come.

The only thing the New Republic readers seemed to be enthusiastic about, was the thought of Faith Hill as “First Lady.”

Most country music fans (record buyers and radio listeners) think that since country music’s lyric content tends to be conservative, promote family values, support the military, and wave Old Glory (”God Bless The USA,” “Do You Remember,” “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (the Angry American),” to name just a few, that the entire Nashville music community must be Republican. After all, Tennessee is a solid ‘red state.’

Nothing could be further from the truth. Sure, the “King of Country Music,” Roy Acuff–who ran for Governor–and Tex Ritter–who ran for the US Senate–were Republicans, but both lost handily. You must remember that the Tennessee of your father, and your father’s father, is not the Tennessee of today. When Roy and Tex ran, Tennessee was solidly in the Democrat column. Not today.

Ironically, Tim Mc Graw is signed to Curb Records–owned by Mike Curb–former Lt. Governor of California, and former Finance Chairman of the RNC. Mike is, by far, the country music industry’s most visible Republican and philanthropist. His numerous charitable contributions to the music industry, the city of Nashville, and the state of Tennessee are to be commended.

Tim is wise to put off running for public office, particularly for Governor, where executive experience, a thorough understanding of the economy, and superior management skills will have an impact on millions of citizens. Tim, you’re a master at packing stadiums and picking out great songs, but for now, you would be way out of your league running for the state’s highest office–even though you certainly have the money to do it!
