Tennessee Democrats Continue To Crumble
By Kleinheider Posted on November 20, 2008 at 10:30 amNot only will the party likely be dealing with Republican speakers in both chambers, it is now clear that if Rep. Gary Odom is able to retain his spot as Minority Leader there may be little coordination with the House Democrats and popular Democratic Governor Phil Bredesen:
“Unfortunately, there have been some trust issues with Rep. Odom,” Bredesen spokeswoman Lydia Lenker told The Associated Press in an e-mail exchange late Wednesday. She did not elaborate on what those issues have been.
“We’re actively exploring options other than Rep. Odom to carry the administration’s legislative package,” she wrote.
Odom has been raising and dispersing a far amount of coin to help out his fellow legislators in expectation of a battle between himself and Jimmy Naifeh. One would assume that money is still good in a Minority Leader race with Rep. Fitzhugh, gubernatorial backing or not.

[...] Tennessee Democrats Continue To Crumble [...]
Owed-’em. Or so they thought.
“…popular Democratic Governor Phil Bredesen:”
Thanks. I needed that laugh today.
Indeed. Bredesen is so laughably popular that he won every single county. Meanwhile, Odom was so busy measuring curtains in the Speaker’s office that he forgot he needed a majority to get elected. Odom is the Homer Simpson of Tennessee politics. Doh!
The real story behind the story is Rep. Randy Rinks (D-Assumptionville), who was so ambitiously eager to run for Secretary of State that he resigned his safe seat in order to get lined up for his captain’s seat on the good ship “S.S. Rinks.”
If Ol’ Randy had kept his ambition in check, then the Democrats would still have a majority in the House. Instead, the Republicans have the majority, and Rinksy has no job.
Now THAT is what the ancient Greeks called HUBRIS — the tragic flaw of Rinks’ ambition was what done him in. (UNLESS — Jason Mumpower will realize the debt that the GOP owes to Rinks and appoint Randy to some key but ironic post, like Doorkeeper.)
