The Regional Power Shift In Tennessee
By Kleinheider Posted on November 16, 2008 at 1:31 pmWhile much has been made of the party and ideological shift in the legislature with the immient GOP takeover, the Jackson Sun looks at that strong wind blowing East:
The recent election was just the final blow to the West Tennessee political hegemony. It began when Gov. Ned McWherter retired. It was followed by Jackson’s Matt Kisber giving up his powerful House seat where he was chairman of the House Finance Committee.
Gov. Phil Bredesen took over the governor’s office in 2002, but he is from Nashville. I have noticed that during his six years in office, Bredesen’s appointments to boards, commissions and other positions have been heavy in Middle and East Tennessee. Memphis gets a few bones tossed its way, but Jackson and rural West Tennessee are largely left out in the cold.

Yup. As I keep saying, the gravy days of Ned are over for west Tennesseans.
The Tennessean has been the primary enabler of Democratic corruption in this state, which explains in great part the long gravy day for West Tennessee legislators. Tennessean Editor Mark Silverman’s column today advising of the paper’s newly found initiative to inform us now that the Republicans apparently have control of the legislature is just so funny that I will try to laugh sometime this afternoon, maybe while I’m rolling the garbage to the street.
[...] The power shift is changing. I honestly don’t know why west Tennessee legislators aren’t paying attention. And if they are, many of them are so involved with the game of politics that they are forgetting about the day-to-day lives of the constituents who voted for them. [...]
It’s about time East Tennessee have some say in this state. For too long West Tennessee called the shots
Yeah, where’s E.H. Crump now that Memphis needs him again, to keep the titular capital and the hick counties from screwing Shelby County out of state expenditures in parity with the revenues we contribute?
If we can get our white and black (even Democrat and Republican) legislators voting as a bloc again to protect Memphis and Shelby County’s interests, the rest of y’all can jump back.
How can you take seriously a guy’s opinion who doesn’t even know the name of the Republican Leader whom he is commenting about — Rep. Gary Mumpower….That would be a cross between Gary Odom and Jason Mumpower. You better believe Dolores Gresham will well take of her district and West TN will survive quite well!
