State Revenues Still Light

Posted on November 12, 2008 at 1:10 pm

From NashPo:

October’s state revenue collections came in at $709 million, up slightly from a year ago but almost $76 million below the budgeted estimate for the month.

Last month was the third in a row that tax collections came up well short of the state’s goal. Through the first three months of the government’s fiscal year, the shortfall stands at almost $218 million.

This clarifies the numbers in a way that much of the reporting on the state budget never does. Revenues for October are UP, as in not DOWN, from a year ago. When the term “shortfall” is used it is only a shortfall in the sense that it is not the revenue that was projected. Well perhaps we ought to be somewhat more careful with respect to what we project.
