The Committee Speculation Committee

Posted on November 11, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Now that Mumpower has his fifty, Post Politics has been barraged by the buzz about which members will be taking the reigns of the various House committees.

Some of the names ringing out in the ear of PP have been Rep. Susan Lynn for Commerce, Rep. Beth Harwell for Education, Rep. Charles Sargeant for Finance and Rep. Brian Kelsey for Judiciary.

While the last name strikes Post Politics as someone’s idea of a bad joke, two of the names are interesting.

Only five members of the incoming GOP caucus are of the fairer sex. As a matter of public relations, it would probably behoove the new Speaker to advance as many females into leadership as possible.

So while there are many members with significant seniority expect to see most of the five in prominent positions either on committees or in floor leadership.

For the record, the Republican Caucus maintains that any names currently circulating are pure speculation. Committee assignments will not be made in the next month and, in all likelihood, not until Jason Mumpower has been officially elected as Speaker.

I think it’s only fair that state Rep. Stacey Campfield be given the chairmanship of the committee Rep. Ulysses Jones ruled.

So you would like overrepresentation on the basis of sex in leadership? Why? Republican women are not such whiners alleging slights as their Democratic counterparts. More of them are Christian conservatives who would rather let the men do the dog-eat-dog thing while they mind the home and the children.

I think we’ll see a slate of good committee chairs come out of this group. It’s going to take some work, but I’m sure Mumpower is up to the task.

Ha….I think if you look it up, Kelsey is actually the ONLY attorney in the House GOP Caucus, since Dubois got knocked off. So Judiciary Chair may have to go to him, unless they bring in a non-lawyer, which is ill advised.

The committee speculation is useless, but fun. A natural fit I see would be Dr. Joey Hensley for the Health Committee.
