Could Fred Thompson Be The Next RNC Chairman?

Posted on October 21, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Save the GOP floats the trial balloon:

1.) Liked, and trusted, by McCain. McCain will want to have some influence over who the pick is, and he and Fred are very close.

2.) Loved by the conservative grassroots. This goes without saying.

3.) A great spokesman for the party. Fred is fantastic in interviews on TV, he’s been one of the best surrogates for McCain on the cable networks through the general election campaign.

4.) He’s not gonna run for President again. Thus, there shouldn’t be a lot of opposition from the Huckabee and Romney folks who competed with him for the nomination last time around.

He’s disorganized and a darling of the far right. If the Republicans Party is in such denial that they believe they’re collapsing because they’re insufficiently rigid and need to be even more right wing, they’re doomed.

Let me follow up on that: if the election ends up where its heading, Republicans will be strong only in the southeast and some prairie/western states. They would have a couple options: deny that they’re doing anything wrong (except not being vicious enough) and hope that Obama falls apart, or try to figure out how to appeal to the middle of the electorate. It doesn’t look like taxes and terrorism are going to do it anymore. Maybe stop with the fanatical opposition to simple points of fact on climate change & evolution, and quit maligning the patriotism of anyone who isn’t in rigid agreement with you? I don’t see Fred having the vision to do that, and he sends one strong message to potential Republicans: “WE’RE OLD.”

His campaign was the joke of DC and he is hated by most in the know consultants.

I don’t think he is who is going to save the party.

    How soon we forget

I don’t think McCain will have much influence on the decision if he loses.

So, where does “lazy” fit into that list?

Fred is one of the most articulate folks around. He took this state by storm in ‘94 with a ‘landslide’ victory of Cong. Jim Cooper who had held a solid 20% advantage in the early polls. In ‘96, Fred’s 61% victory proved beyond any doubt, that he was the ‘real deal.’

Fred’s rather lackluster performance in the Republican Presidential primaries this election cycle were compounded by his late start (and apparent lack of a ‘fire in the belly’). He never gained any real traction despite being the ‘darling’ and choice of many Conservatives, including myself.

I am honored to have known six former RNC Chairmen, including former President George H. W. Bush and Lee Atwater (had Lee not passed away tragically at age 39, Bush, the father, would have trounced slick Willie in ‘92 and Obama (who?) would not have a prayer against Mc Cain–or virtually any Republican–in this year’s election.

All-in-all, Fred Thompson would be an excellent choice. My only question is: is he willing to accept the position–and thus give up a far more lucrative acting career–or, perhaps, return to lobbying?

As to Sen. Mc Cain having a voice in the selection–’win’ or ‘lose’–I believe he would support Fred. Hopefuilly, as the newly elected President–and head of the Republican Party–Sen. Mc Cain will have the honor of asking Fred to serve. As to those ‘naysayers’ who are reading these remarks and think that Fred is ‘too old,’ they most likely don’t know the man.

Surely, the electorate will come to their senses over the next two weeks and elect Sen. Mc Cain and Gov. Palin. If they don’t, we’ll need Fred’s charm, wit and leadership to return the party to prominence in 2010 and beyond.

Don’t go signing any pre-mature death certificates for the Republican party quite yet. The Liberal media attempted to do that after the defeat of Barry Goldwater in ‘64, and former President Gerald Ford in ‘76. We came back stronger than ever every time. It will only take two years of an Obama (God forbid) Presidency to return the Republican Party to prominence.
