Parody And Satire

Posted on October 20, 2008 at 7:13 am

Katherine Miller discusses the differences she sees between Democrats and Republicans:

It goes back to a theory I’ve floated on more than one occasion: Republicans prefer parody, Democrats prefer satire. According to a Harvard study this summer, Republicans (including myself) favor the Colbert Report to the Daily Show by a 49 to 21 margin (Dems favor Stewart 43-41). The comments on that post think it’s because all Republicans all emerged from a haystack carrying Bibles, spellbound by the newfangled internets and television, and hoodwinked by this lovely conservative man, Stephen Colbert, but I think it goes something more like this: Republicans like to laugh at themselves and be permitted a little greater license in mocking the other side; Democrats want their viewpoint reinforced through the ironies of reality. Democrats may be smart, but Republicans are good sports (and more fun).

I don’t quite buy this line of argument. Just because one group may prefer one or the other doesn’t mean they don’t like the other show. I can’t think of any Democrats my age I know who don’t like Colbert. In fact, I love Colbert for how amazingly he skewers people like Billo and Hannity. I may be more likely to watch TDS because it comes on first, but it doesn’t mean anything about my comedic preferences.

However, if the stats are true, then you could turn the argument around. You could argue that conservatives don’t like TDS because they don’t like to be reminded of how ridiculous they sound. Although if conservatives watched TDS, they’d know that Jon Stewart makes fun of Democrats equally.

Ms. Miller, take some advice from a grad student…after the election, don’t trouble your head with stuff like this. Go enjoy being an undergrad, where your biggest worry is what to wear to your next sorority mixer. Go be a “fun conservative”! Trust me on this.
