Obama Clears The Ayers

Posted on October 10, 2008 at 2:46 pm

The presidential candidate talks openly about his controversial associate:

“Ultimately, I ended up learning about the fact that he had engaged in this reprehensible act 40 years ago, but I was eight years old at the time and I assumed that he had been rehabilitated,” he told radio host Michael Smerconish. “This guy is not part of my inner circle, he doesn’t advise my campaign, he’s not going to advise me as president,” Obama added, and criticized McCain for focusing on Ayers when the economy is in turmoil, calling the issue a “red herring.” “The fact that Senator McCain wants to make this the centerpiece of his campaign is pretty remarkable. We are going through an enormous challenge right now.”

He’s knocking down strawmen left and right. Nobody has accused Ayers of STILL being an active terrorist and nobody has accused him of being an advisor to the campaign. They HAVE questioned Obama’s judgment for kicking off his campaign in the man’s living room then working on two education reform boards largely based on Ayers’ radical ideas of reform–not when Obama was 8, but when Obama was 35-38.

The reason some people are ticked at this association (btw, Obama has been making a point that McCain associates with Bush) is because Ayers stomped a flag and is unrepentant, and they don’t want a president who isn’t bothered by that.

Bull. Sarah Palin accused Obama of “paling around with terrorists” last week and surrogates made other trumped-up charges. After the mainstream media, including the NY Times, reported how tenuous the connection was, suddenly it became “we’re just saying this because it’s about honesty.”

What about honesty when you’re talking about Sarah and Todd Palin’s connection with a secessionist group that has violence-promoting leadership in its history (if you don’t believe me look them up). When are they going to quit rationalizing their association, which basically goes up to the present, and be “honest” about that?

The Republican Annenbergs gave their money to fund the group Ayers and Obama served on, and Mrs. Annenberg is a McCain supporter, so using GOP logic I guess McCain pals around with pals who pal around with terrorists. Anyone for a “Six Degrees of Terrorist Games?”

Ultimately this only matters to wingnuts and political junkies. McCain said it best in 2000 when he noted (and I’m paraphrasing) that if you kept launching personal attacks against your opponent people would figure out you had nothing to offer them on the issues. Bingo!
