Haters For Obama

Posted on October 7, 2008 at 11:51 am

Ben Smith shows us exactly how bad this economy is:

An Obama supporter, who canvassed for the candidate in the working-class, white Philadelphia neighborhood of Fishtown recently, sends over an account that, in various forms, I’ve heard a lot in recent weeks.

“What’s crazy is this,” he writes. “I was blown away by the outright racism, but these folks are f***ing undecided. They would call him a n—-r and mention how they don’t know what to do because of the economy.”

Economic fear is a powerful motivator. The number one issue that can change a voter from being a straight-line GOP voter to voting Democratic (or vice versa like in 1980) is the condition of the economy. Racism is visceral and real, but economic fear can force a racist into voting for a black man–if they see incompetence as the alternative. Polling is showing that as Obama moves higher in the polls he is pulling over more racist and Republican voters who see McCain as an incompetent angry ole coot.

Stated another way, if a Grand Wizard of the KKK was drowning in a lake and the only person who could save him was an African-American he would let that man save him. A racist who thinks McCain can’t help the country and Obama might, will vote for Obama.
