Plausible Deniability

Posted on September 24, 2008 at 1:41 pm

David Oatney wonders why David Kernell, accused Sarah Palin email hacker and son of state Rep. Mike Kernell, was not a member of the College Democrats.

The UT Democrats’ rush to distance themselves from this situation begs the question: Why wasn’t David Kernell, the son of a Democratic State Representative, involved in the College Democrats at the University of Tennessee? If this young man is as interested in politics as this kind of activity would seem to indicate, he should have actively sought out the College Democrats. Because his father is a State Representative, Kernell very likely would have been placed on a leadership track in the organization very quickly. He had a wonderful opportunity to really become a “Big Man On Campus.” Yet he apparently chose instead to hack into Sarah Palin’s e-mail.

God I love it when people tell other people what organizations they SHOULD be joining based on presumptions about said persons’ interests.

I’m interested in politics but I was never involved in the College Democrats (although I am involved in the Law School Democrats now). I don’t know how it is at UT, but there were a lot of internal politics going on within the Cornell College Dems, and I just had no interest in getting in the middle of all of that. In addition, Model UN and the sorority already took up a good chunk of my time outside of class.

My point is, it’s unfair to infer anything from his non-involvement in the College Dems, because there could have been a million reasons why not.

David Oatney has no clue about this. Writing well does not cover up ignorance of the subject.

His facebook before he deleted it said that he was a member of the College Dems. He was not actively involved though from what I have been able to find out. There are many liberal organizations at UT like the progressive student alliance and others that he could have been more involved with.
