Write-in Ros: It’s On, Son

Posted on September 15, 2008 at 12:10 pm

Post Politics has confirmed that Senator Rosalind Kurita has indeed filed, in each county of the 22nd State Senate district, a certificate of write-in candidacy. Senator Rosalind Kurita will be an official write-in candidate for reelection to the seat she now holds.

Her name will not be on the ballot but any registered voter in the district will be able to cast their vote to keep Rosalind Kurita in the Tennessee state Senate regardless of what a  tri-county convention, tasked by the Tennessee Democratic Party Executive committee to resolve “incurable uncertainties” in the election, decides.

When asked by Post Politics why she took this unusual step, Senator Rosalind Kurita responded, “I think it’s obvious why this step was necessary. This is America. You don’t just let someone steal an election.”

Kurita credits supporters with helping her recognize what she needed to do.

“I received so many calls and messages of support since Saturday, it has really been overwhelming,” Kurita explains. “So many people I know have called and told me, ‘You’re a fighter, Rosalind, fight this.’ So that’s what I’m doing.”

Good! Unlike many Republicans (and some Democrats) who seem always ready to defend the indefensible where their party is concerned, this Democrat thinks what happened Saturday was a travesty. I know the public ballot is a “preference” vote, but since we have them we should abide by them. Ros won that vote, period. As has been noted this was just payback for casting the deciding vote that removed John “I’ve been in power WAY too long and since I give some money to GOP candidates and give some chairmanships to GOP lawmakers to keep my speaker’s chair I’m a traitor to my party anyway” Wilder. It was his fault that it came to that vote. If he’d relinquished power 20 years ago we might still have a Democrat as Lt. Governor today (yes, not a certainty, but his “deal with the devil” to keep his power aided the GOP in the long run).

Didnt Senator Burks wage a write in campaign in ‘98? I think she did….I believe it was too late to put her name on the ballot. The legendary Alabama State Senator Lowell Barron(he’s the one that was punched by the GOP Senator last year) is the only other state senator that I know of in the south who has waged a successful write-in campaign. His situation was similar to Kurita’s. The head honchos in Montgomery tossed a few democrats off the ballot back in ‘86 because they werent voting the way they wanted them too. So Barron went back home to Ft Payne, Al and launched a write in campaign and he ended up defeating the GOP and Democrat nominees that November. That year turned out to be a bad year for democrats in Alabama despite a great year nationally for democrats. They also removed the democrat nominee for Governor( who received more votes than his opponent in the primary) because they didnt like him(sound familiar?). This enabled a small town preacher named Guy Hunt to swoop in and become the first ever GOPer to become Alabama Governor.
