Defeat Deferred: Democratic Executive Committee Punts On Kurita

Posted on September 13, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Via the AP:

The Tennessee Democratic Party Executive Committee has voted to declare state Sen. Rosalind Kurita’s thin primary victory invalid. The panel voted 33-11 on Saturday to declare Kurita’s 19-vote victory “incurably uncertain” after her opponent, Clarksville attorney Tim Barnes, alleged heavy Republican interference in the Democratic nominating contest.

A joint convention of the Democratic executive committees in Cheatham, Houston and Montgomery counties will now determine who the nominee will be. There is no Republican running in the general election.

Just like a bunch of Democrats. Jim Kyle takes Memphis democracy statewide. Steal any election you can get.

Oh whatever, expect to hear much Republican bellyaching because they lost their Kurita Puppet.

A Democrat never met a rule he wouldn’t change if he didn’t like the outcome.

I don’t see where the ExecComm punted. They made a courageous decision and left the naming of the nominee to the local party committees involved instead of naming one themselves.

All of the thousands of people that voted don’t matter one bit. Let a few guys in a smokey room decide who gets to be senator. Way to go, Tennessee Democrats. That’s democracy.

Rosalind, thank you for your courage in doing what needed to be done for this state, political parties aside. You voted for some sanity, ethics, and true bipartisanship in government, but your party is having none of that.

Wow, it’s obvious that the majority of people lamenting senator Kurita’s fall have no idea of the actual facts of the issue.
Simply put, by willing and ADMITTEDLY going into a polling place in Cheatham county on election day, Senator Kurita violated the public’s trust. She’d been elected to the state senate three times, so it’s not as if she ‘didn’t know’ about the hundred foot rule. Facts are facts, she broke the rules. I, for one, am glad to see the executive committee take a stand and hold one of their own accountable for their actions.

Drew, you must be part of the crybaby Tim Barnes legal team. Are you seriously attempting to argue that an entire election should be overturned just because a candidate went into a polling place to use the restroom? Are you seriously attempting to argue that thousands of voters should be disenfranchised for this reason?

Admit the truth. You’re a democrat. Your candidate lost the election. So you believe the election should be stolen.

Bet you whined about Florida and Ophelia Ford, too.

    Laughable,
I guess your screen name is appropriate, seeing as you seem to find the idea of elected officials actually following the rules to be a funny discourse. yes, I am a democrat, and a proud one at that. As with being a football fan, I’m enough of one to admit when the team makes bad decisions and when they suck. Guess what, Kurita made a bad call and she got penalized for it

Notice all the Republicans are up in arms, since they lost their “pal”, Kurita. Keeping in mind, of course, that SHE BROKE THE LAW. Entering a polling place is ILLEGAL. A

Only an idiot or someone unconcerned with the rule of law would argue that an entire election should be thrown out because a candidate went in a polling place to take a leak. Of couse, both of these descriptions fit Democrats.

The Tennessee Democratic Party should drop the farce and just admit that they don’t give a shit about fair elections. I heard they let Barnes campaign workers testify yesterday. What a farce.

Yeah, somebody sends an e-mail to the Mike Faulk campaign and gets a return reply from the Rosalind Kurita campaign.

Ramsey got caught with his fingerprints all over this race.

The big difference here was the Democrats held their debate in open session. If these were Republicans, no reporter would’ve gotten within a mile of this decision.

I’d suggest F-M’s monicker is appropriately chosen, but not in the way he/she thinks.

Here’s the difference. Democrats cross over and vote for a candidate they find acceptable in the First District Congressional Republican Primary. Of course, the loser is upset but decides against a contest after his party leaders tell him to play by the rules and respect the ballot box. Republicans cross over and vote for a candidate they find acceptable in a State Senate Democrat Primary. The Democrat Party leaders pitch a hissy fit and trump up some reason to throw the rules and thousands of votes out the window. Which party deserves our vote.

    Tom Paine -

“The big difference here was the Democrats held their debate in open session. If these were Republicans, no reporter would’ve gotten within a mile of this decision.”

Nearly every Republican SEC meeting over the past 2 years has been held in Legislative Plaza, which, state law provides, can be attended by members of the media.

The kangaroo court that stole Kurita’s win did not decide this race. Anyone with a decent source within the Tennessee Democratic Party knew that this vote was already decided before Barnes even filed his challenge.

Just another case, Tom, where you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

    Cheers,

    Rob

Without necessarily supporting the decision, I do have to note with a snicker my ironic appreciation when REPUBLICANS suddenly become concerned with democracy. I guess republics are only supposed to protect conservative minorities from the will of the majority?

Well, at least the Dems were not successful in stealing the 2000 election.

But the law of averages have to win sometimes, so I guess they got Kurita.
