That Moment

Posted on September 8, 2008 at 9:52 am

Jerome believes that the reason Barack Obama has trouble with Evangelicals is that he has no compelling “born again” moment which to weave into his narrative of coming to Christ:

The main reason I believe that Obama fails to gain traction with evangelicals (and particularly conservative evangelicals) is because we’ve never heard him describe a life changing encounter with Jesus Christ. He gives the mantra that he’s a Christian (although some bloggers are posting about this gaffe over the weekend about his “muslim faith”), but he does so in a universalist way. There has been some writers who have covered this issue previously, and here is a link to an article by Joseph Farah that discusses the subject. Evangelicals know that there is only one way to Heaven, not many as Obama claims. And we know what it means to be a Christian, not just claim the title as Obama does.

The reason he has trouble gaining traction is that they are single (or 2-3) issue voters focusing on being anti-choice, anti-gay, pro-theocracy.

Obama can’t connect because he doesn’t believe the Government should be enforcing biblical law on the general public.

If you read much about the man, he says he “came to Christ,” found him to be his “personal Savior,” at a church in Chicago.

Because he does not wrap it all up into a tear-jerking narrative does not mean it is not important to him. Perhaps he reveres it too much to believe it should be exploited for political gain.

I don’t think McCain has come forward with a “born again” moment of his own. Is there one standard for one party and another standard for the other?

….and the demonization of the religious beliefs held by millions of blue collar people that democrats “claim” to care so much about continues…..

In spite of Mr. Braisted’s risible characterizations of the views of those he disagrees with, he is correct that Obama does not attract evangelical voters because he has little to commend himself to them in terms of policy.

The elder Bush was an Episcopalean and Ronald Reagan rarely attended church. I don’t recall either of them ever speaking of a conversion experience, but evangelicals supported them by and large because they agreed with their political prinicples
