The Passion Of Politics

Posted on September 5, 2008 at 4:21 pm

One Catholic conservative is not as ecstatic as the rest of the right with the political elevation of Sarah Palin:

The revelation of the pregnancy of Palin’s 17-year-old daughter has been jumped on by the left with glee, but Catholics can certainly understand that sin happens. More disturbing is the fact that Mrs. Palin knew that accepting the nomination meant exposing her daughter to international scrutiny and ridicule—and yet she did it anyway. Unlike her daughter’s premarital sex, that was not a decision made in the heat of passion.

As a Catholic conservative woman, I find the author’s contentions a bit on the self-righteous side, particularly when discussing Gov. Palin’s process of decision and motivation about this. Does he consider that Gov. Palin is not necessarily placing her service to the people ABOVE that of her family?

It is often far easier in large families to accomplish more….specifically because everyone contributes and helps one another. I know this from personal experience.

What I found a little strange is that the Palins apparently told their kids they were going to Ohio for some kind of family vacation–not to accept the VP nomination. I would have thought this kind of huge step that affects everyone in the family would have been discussed ahead of time, so the kids (including the pregnant one) could be prepared. Not sprung on them.

Who am I to tell other people how to raise their kids. I just know that’s how I would have done it.

    Southern B,

I don’t find that strange at all, especially if secrecy was important. Kids communicate with one another frequently and love to share news with each other. However, you also mentioned that this APPARENTLY took place, so perhaps you have no real evidence of it? We also don’t know if the issue of running for VP was discussed by the entire family much earlier, do we?
