Free Trade Is Phat

Posted on August 28, 2008 at 12:49 pm

Jeff Cassman sings the praises of comparative advantage saying that free trade is good — especially for married men who let themselves go:

NAFTA has been great for America, and good for our partners.  That giant ’sucking’ sound predicted by protectionists has turned out to be completely false.  Studies show that states like Ohio benefit as well as border states like Texas and Arizona.  The states that have suffered since the passage of NAFTA are socialist states like Michigan who refuse to modernize and instead raise taxes.

As for the clothing, I don’t understand the problem.  I’ve never once had a problem finding the right size dress shirt.  When I got married I went from a size 16 to 16.5, and bought new shirts.  After a decade of marriage I found I needed a 17, and bought new shirts.  When I let my weight get out of control, I had to buy a few 17.5 and found them with ease.  I prefer a 35 sleeve, and have never had a problem finding a 35.  In fact, my Dad tells me there are far more options today than when he started shopping for himself in the 60s.  My own experience of the last 15 years reflects that as well; my wife buys dress shirts and tie combinations for my young sons at WalMart and they’re only $9!

I guess that explains why the economy in Ohio is so strong.

    Oh, wait.

    Never mind.

Maybe Oprah could do a show about how marriage and NAFTA are causing straight men to gain weight and talk more openly about shopping and their clothing sizes. It could help thousands navigate these troubling new realities.

All of Maury County’s clothing factories that women, such as my mother, depended on to support their families, have closed and gone to Mexico, China, etc. But never mind. The welfare office is full.
