Awful Finney-key: State Senator Likely To Abandon Recount

Posted on August 15, 2008 at 4:51 pm

State Senator Ray Finney seems to have decided to “give up the ghost” on his campaign for a recount of his August 7th Republican primary defeat to state Rep. Doug Overbey:

Finney, who served one term representing Blount and Sevier counties, said part of the reason he filed the petition was that there is a very short window of time after the election in which he can ask for a recount and that if he had had more time to investigate what his petition called “irregularities” in the voting he might not have filed the petition.

Finney said he intends to “go on with my life” and added that some of the questions raised in his petition “may never be answered.

Thank God. Good riddance to this Christianist nutjob.

Raymond Finney was programed out of office by the corrupt officials in Sevier County. After having blindsided the Good Ol Boys 6 years ago, the political machine that follows the law as they know them have removed one of the finest persons the Citizens of Sevier And Blount County ever had in the Senate.

Overbey will be a return to a closed door for the ordinary citizen. His voting record in the House tells it all about where he is, and that is right smack in the Bed with those who would personally gain from being a make believe “public servant”.

Finney should sue the Sevier County Election Commission. Maybe the reason he backed down on the recount is to put those funds toward a lawsuit. I hope so!

As a voter in Sevier COunty, I am pleased Finney is leaving. He voted for a bill that took millions out of Sevier County Schools, but did put him in the Governors favor. Even though his “no” vote would not have changed the outcome, its nice to know your Senator is “with” you when he’s voting, and not “with” the powers that impressed him so. Also, his argument for a recount is the same as the nut-job that sued the Election Commission here over another lost election, and thats already been thrown out of Chancery Court, appealed, and thrown out of the Court of Appeals too. I guess all those Judges are “rigged” too, huh Clark.

Sevier Voter- Please get your facts straight and don’t listen to an Overbey campaign flyer. Overbey wanted us to believe that Finney was responsible for the school funding, and along with his bf Parton he succeeded in convincing many. But the facts are :

Finney’s vote was one of two methods the State of Tennessee had to make in obedience to a COURT ORDER to equalize school funding proportionately to school enrollment across the State.
The first method was to RAISE TAXES STATEWIDE and distribute the money equally to unequally funded Counties.
The second method was to take the existing revenue and distribute it fairly across the State{which included a pay raise for teachers}.

Which seems like the better choice to you. And by the way if he had picked #2 then Overbey’s campaign would have been Finney raised your taxes!

And he didn’t tell folks that there was no pending emissions bill. So telling people repeatedly Finney sent your education dollars to Memphis and Finney wants you to pay more for gas. Those were extremely misleading.

Senator Finney was a fine Senator and did a wonderful job. He made his self available and listened to us. He acted on our concerns. He stood strong in his convictions. Now, you try and speak with Overbey see if he answers his home phone and gives out his cell.

Overbey was bought and paid for by Sevier County, but he fits in with the ones who paid for him.

Fact 1: Sen. Jamie Woodson wrote the bill with imput from Prof. Bill Fox of the UT Economics Dept. There was no “option 1 or 2″ as you state. Although she did re-write it three or four times.. ( each time Knox Co. fared better and better )..maybe thats what he is referring to. It was just a bill that was voted yea, or nae. He voted yea. Had the bill failed, we would still be operating under the old formula, or something enacted later.

Fact 2: Finney said after passage of the bill “It was a mistake” (to vote in favor). Sounds like he knew there would be fallout, and was doing his damage control up front.

Fact 3: The litigation over School Funding was settled in the 90’s. No litigation was or is pending. Thats too lame to comment on, and if thats his excuse, then he’s getting senile.

Fact 4: Sevier County lost funds of over 2.3 million dollars with the new formula, dollars they would have gotten under the old formula in place at the time, and they also lost some future growth funding.

Fact 5: Finney is blaming the School Director in Sevier County for his defeat, so why then was the Directors Sales Tax increase proposal defeated if he’s so all powerfull ? Overbey won Sevier Co. by 1500, but the tax went down by 70. So Parton can muster 1500 votes, but not 70 ??? Sorry Finney, I ain’t buyin.

Oh and just for fun, do you have a clue whose dollars paid for ” teacher raises “? Hint: Wasn’t anything to so with your Senator, or his vote.
