Burning Down Tennessee’s Open Primary

Posted on August 14, 2008 at 9:18 am

Terry Frank becomes on of the few voices encouraging Rep. David Davis to continue to fight his unfavorable election result and mount a challenge to Tennessee’s open primary system:

Lt. Governor Ramsey has said David Davis needs to just pipe down and move on along. I’m not so sure, Speaker Ramsey. If settling the political dust is the goal, then yes. But if cleaning up the system or making it better is an outcome, I say “CHARGE!!” to Congressman Davis.

Reading Jama and Josh’s comments, which are both very good, I think the question revolves around Congressman Davis and his own personal goals. For instance, Jama says even if he wins, he loses.

Well, I would say it’s pretty darn tough to hold a seat, lose it and then win again anyway. Impossible, no. Difficult, yes.

But Roe’s pretty tainted in his own right now.

But back to Davis and his goals, knowing what little I do about him, I think he is a good hearted and well meaning individual. I could see someone like David Davis fighting this battle whether it would benefit him or not.

Could it clean up the process, that is, clean it up for both parties?

Yes. That is, if you’re one of those who doesn’t think crossing over is a true primary.

it’s odd Davis and Frank see a need for “cleaning up the process” only because Davis lost. no change was prompted by Davis after one of his opponents challenged the outcome in 2006.

i heard many a Republican voter on Limbaugh’s comedy show this year cheerfully proclaim how they had been invading Democrat primaries to support Sen. Clinton - but the whole system needs repairing due to Davis’ disappointment?
