Marsha Blackburn Gets Crossways With Memphis Homebuilders Over Housing Bill

Posted on July 31, 2008 at 11:40 am

They have endorsed her opponent:

The 15 Past Presidents of the Memphis Area Association of Home Builders, whose names you find below, ask that you vote against Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn in the upcoming primary election.

When President Bush signed the Housing Stimulus Act into law, months of concerted effort by many groups and individuals culminated in an important victory for homebuilders. A victory desperately needed by those of us in the beleaguered housing industry. This piece of legislation holds real promise to revive our struggling industry and may determine whether some of the businesses which belong to our association survive the current downturn.

While we are elated at the passage of this bill we are very disappointed that Marsha Blackburn chose to vote against it and our interests. Compounding our disappointment is the fact that members of MAHBA met with Congresswoman Blackburn on numerous occasions to explain in detail our support for this legislation.

Marsha Blackburn’s vote on this issue clearly demonstrates that we cannot count on her to look out for the interests of homebuilders or for those who rely upon the home building industry to earn their living. We need real friends in Congress, representatives who share our concerns and understand the importance of homebuilding to the economy. Congresswoman Blackburn does not deserve the support or votes of the members of MAHBA.

Please demonstrate your dissatisfaction with her vote against the Housing Stimulus Act by voting for Tom Leatherwood in the Republican primary.

Whre are the Blackburn apologists? Steve84, TN Repubilcan, Novak… hellooooo? This has been up over an hour and there aren’t 20 comments about how this is Tom Leatherwood’s fault. Looks like others are beginning to see that its time to get Blackburn out of office.

You should noticed MAHBA did not say Leatherwood would have done any better. They just want Blackburn out of congress.

Blackburn’s apologists are trying to figure out how to handle that. Really Leatherwood has nothing to do with this so how can they talk bad about him on this thing.

I guess the MAHBA won’t be hiring Marsha’s son-in-law to lobby; or better yet, they obviously did not hire him to lobby this; that was their mistake.

I’d love to see how Leatherwood plays this. Of course he loves that he has MAHBA’s support, but he can’t jump on Blackburn for her vote seeing as he is attempting to run to her right on spending. This bill had so much pork and attached to it that even Bob Corker, himself a former real estate and construction man, voted against this bill.

So, Leatherwood can either: a) happily accept this endorsement and imply that he supported this pork-laden mess of a bill, thereby giving more damage to his SCHIP-wounded cred as an opponent of wasteful spending or b) come out against the bill and potentially anger MAHBA, thereby losing this newly gained endorsement from a tempermental group (the only Homebuilders Association in the state to go against their Congressman who opposed this bill).

    The ball’s in Tom’s court….

Or Leatherwood can just say nothing and go on about his business. That would be the smarter move.

Mickey, you should write something nice about Marsha now.

Tom Leatherwood supports the federal government giving taxpayers money to liberal groups that are supporting Barack Obama for President!

After reading the Homebuilders’ letter it sounds like the only reason why they are endorsing Tom over Marsha is because Marsha voted against the Housing bill and they believe that Tom would have voted for the bill. If it is true that Tom Leatherwood does in fact support the Housing bill then once again we would have to believe that he supports everything that is in the bill which would mean that he supports the provision in the bill that gives taxpayer’s money to politically active groups like La Raza and ACORN which are both currently under investigation for voter fraud and embezzlement and are trying to use taxpayers money to turn the vote out for Obama. If true this wouldn’t surprised me since Leatherwood has been endorsed by the Commercial Appeal, has taken money from Unions, Trial Lawyers and has teamed up with the liberal group CREW in an effort to take out the Most Conservative Woman in Congress.

Wow. Mickey praising Blackburn int he same week Ron Paul and she voted the same way on an appropriations bill? What is the world coming to? This must be a sign. Maybe Obama is the anti-christ…

This whole article isn’t worth my time. Some organization with a petty vendetta went against every other organization in their industry just to snub their congressman? And it wasn’t even the organization itself. The “past 15 presidents”? What is that? what about the current board? Past presidents is like saying George H Bush, Reagan, Ford, Nixon and Eisenhower all got together and decided to endorse potato chips over pretzels becasue GW Bush once choked on a pretzel. No one is going to stop eating pretzels and no one cares what the MAHBA does…or it’s past presidents.
Maybe it was worth my time…

MannyG if you have read any of my older letters to the editor, Fayette County - Memphis CA, you would know that I have congradulated Marsha on several votes. But she is supposed to vote good. She only needs correction when she votes bad. (And she has been very bad lately)

Anyone checked the FEC reports lately? Leatherwood forgot to account for his campaign office. It suddenly appears on the most recent report with all the payments for all months on the same day. And its inkind which means some landlord gave him the office. But its Blackburn thats a crook? Anyone notice the money contributed by Leatherwood’s employees? Macing? Not in Shelby County. Oh, well. He’s a good conservative so he can’t be wrong.
