Tom Leatherwood May Have Had Better Sundays Than This One…

Posted on July 20, 2008 at 11:16 am

…but, if so, he probably can’t remember them right now. Just as early voting for the August 7th primary starts to ramp up, Gannett’s man in Washington reveals the lobbying efforts of Rep. Marsha Blackburn’s son-in-law, Paul Ketchel:

Ketchel, who earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Tennessee, worked for former Tennessee Sen. Bill Frist from 1998-2001 as technology systems administrator. There he met Blackburn’s daughter, Mary Morgan. He then worked in government relations for a pharmaceutical company before striking out on his own as a lobbyist. He lobbied under the name Ketchel & Associates before going to work for the firm now known as American Capitol Group.

“I don’t feel that I should have to give up my career simply because my wife’s mother was elected to public office at a later time,” Ketchel said.

Blackburn was first elected in 2002 and began serving in 2003. The first lobbying reports mentioning Ketchel appear in May 2003.

    The real story is the unreported actions taking place within the Leatherwood Campaign.

    The only thing that Tom Leatherwood is well prepared for is to be the new Memphis City Dog Catcher. The only problem is that the dog catcher sure has a lot of dogs in his circle of trust running his campaign.

    You have Chris Thomas the womanizing, affair driven Memphis Court Clerk; Ben Ferguson the radio show host who as others have said appears to be using his power to make inappropriate gestures towards unsuspecting interns and is gunning for a press secretary job before his current show is canceled like his last one; Brian Elder the country music radio host who breaks FCC laws by using corporate dollars to campaign for Leatherwood on the air and in an interesting twist is secretly battling Ben Ferguson for a press secretary job; David Pickler who when not romantically involved with Anne Edmiston is trying to get his hands on as much taxpayer money as possible and then of course there a just a few dogs like Wyatt Bunker, Mike Wissman and Keith McDonald who are just out chasing cars.

    But lets not forget about the dog catcher himself:

    After running a consistently not so nice guy negative campaign against Blackburn regarding FEC issues, Leatherwood deliberately did not report his campaign website with his FEC filings, broke FEC laws on his yard signs, radio ads and his power point looking tv ads and there are more violations to come as his 2nd quarter FEC filing report was just recently released and is chalk full of them. Also missing from Leatherwood’s FEC report was a campaign HQ. But that’s OK! He uses his taxpayer funded county government office for that which just happens to be next to the Shelby County Election Commission off of Mullins Station Road.

    Vote Tom Leatherwood for Memphis City Dog Catcher! Commercial Appeal Approved.

    Let’s have fun with this comment, shall we?

    The real story is the unreported actions taking place within the Leatherwood Campaign.

    Yep. The real story that no one except yourself, just now, has mentioned.

    The only thing that Tom Leatherwood is well prepared for is to be the new Memphis City Dog Catcher. The only problem is that the dog catcher sure has a lot of dogs in his circle of trust running his campaign.

    I’m pretty sure someone came up with the dog catcher line in the 1950’s. It’s 2008 man! You’re on a blog! Get with the times.

    You have Chris Thomas the womanizing, affair driven Memphis Court Clerk;

    Even if he’s done something A) Its his personal life and B) it’s completely unrelated to the 7th Congressional District Seat.

    Ben Ferguson the radio show host who as others have said appears to be using his power to make inappropriate gestures towards unsuspecting interns and is gunning for a press secretary job before his current show is canceled like his last one;

    Name “others.” For that matter, name one instance where Ben has been affiliated with the Leatherwood campaign. Can’t? Yeah, that’s what I thought. He just happens to be fed up Marsha, like lots of others. And please, please cite a source on why a successful radio host in Memphis would ake job as an under-paid Capitol staffer.

    Brian Elder the country music radio host who breaks FCC laws by using corporate dollars to campaign for Leatherwood on the air and in an interesting twist is secretly battling Ben Ferguson for a press secretary job;

    Same as above. Cite a source, other than your own mind?

    David Pickler who when not romantically involved with Anne Edmiston is trying to get his hands on as much taxpayer money as possible and then of course there a just a few dogs like Wyatt Bunker, Mike Wissman and Keith McDonald who are just out chasing cars.

    Not only does this not make sense, at all, but David Pickler is the Chairman of the School Board. If anyone needs funds, its schools. Really? Hating children?

    But lets not forget about the dog catcher himself:
    After running a consistently not so nice guy negative campaign against Blackburn regarding FEC issues, Leatherwood deliberately did not report his campaign website with his FEC filings, broke FEC laws on his yard signs, radio ads and his power point looking tv ads and there are more violations to come as his 2nd quarter FEC filing report was just recently released and is chalk full of them.

    First, its “chock” full. As far as the violations, look a tad closer rather than just repeating the Marsha party-line. The website was created after the second quarter filings, and the TV ads were not in violation. You are correct on the campaign signs. One point for you. Also, please provide evidence/proof on “more violations to come” and “deliberately did not report.”

    Also missing from Leatherwood’s FEC report was a campaign HQ. But that’s OK! He uses his taxpayer funded county government office for that which just happens to be next to the Shelby County Election Commission off of Mullins Station Road.

    Might want to double-check on that one as well. Its in Lakeland. Just saying.

    Vote Tom Leatherwood for Memphis City Dog Catcher! Commercial Appeal Approved.

    Wow. Just, wow.
    I guess I just get tired of mis-information, lies, and deliberate hate-speak, no matter where its coming from. I realize there’s no convincing you otherwise, but maybe this will help someone else out.

    Who is this guy and what did he do with Joe Saino? Watchdog, you’re getting behind Marsha Marsha Marsha? Really?

    I agree with the point that Watchdog seems to be making. Who a candidate has involved in their campaign matters. Just look at all of the fuss that has been made over people in the McCain\Obama\Clinton camps this past year. If any of what watchdog said is true then not only is that disturbing but Leatherwood should also publicly call for their resignation.

    Jimbo Novak is calling himself memphis_watchdog today.

    He attacks anything that looks like a threat to Marsha.

    JimBo when will Marsha debate Tom? I just heard her new radio commercial.. it says Tom is a big spender, but does not mention Marsha’s BILLIONS

    Watchdogs comments are no more based on a lack of information than the ones Leatherwood makes claiming Blackburn’s daughter has been given more than $300,000 from the campaign. The FEC investigation has shown that number is inflated by Leatherwood himself. That is one lie for Leatherwood. He $500,000 committed before the campaign started seems to be another lie. He has not even been elected yet and has lied to the general public and his own supporters. I can’t imagine what he would say if he got elected.

    In the comments of an article about Blackburn’s lobbyest son-in-law, her supporters have somehow hijacked the conversation with a smokescreen of bogus inuendo.
    The reality of the situation is that Marsha Blackburn has become part of the problem in Washington, and anyone who doesn’t intuitively sense that is choosing to put on blinders.
    Leatherwood has been a faithful public servant and would do a fine job representing his district. He is facing an entrenched incumbent sitting on an $800,000 war chest, surely a David vs. Goliath situation if ever I’ve heard of one.
    The fact that so many officials have put their neck on the line by coming out and supporting him speaks well of his character, and poorly for that of Blackburn.
    Considering that both Blackburn and Leatherwood are both conservatives who were instrumental in stopping the proposed state income tax and agree on most essential issues, this primary offers us an easy decision.
    On one side, in Blackburn we have a bloated incumbent with a record of deficit spending through pork-barrel earmarks, mismanaged campaign finances and nespotism. On the other side you have a well spoken, efficient manager who has increased the efficiency of his office while cutting expenses.
    Get your head out of the sand and the smoke out of your eyes, people, for the choice is clear.
