Inquiring Minds Want To Know

Posted on July 15, 2008 at 9:28 am

A query from Bill Hobbs:

Last year, Planned Parenthood received $1.5 million a year from the state budget, thanks to the efforts of pro-abortion Democrats like Gov. Phil Bredesen and House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh. Does Planned Parenthood’s PAC give money to pro-abortion Tennessee legislators like Naifeh?

Does it anger you that your tax dollars subsidize the nation’s largest (and highly profitable) abortion seller, and that they funnel some of that money to the political campaigns of the politicians who gave them the earmarks?

UPDATE: Sean Braisted:

Apparently, they don’t train their press people over at the TNGOP to use computers. Because there is this lovely Government department, called the Tennessee Registry of Finance, which tracks donations from PACs to political candidates. According to the site, Planned Parenthood does not have a registered PAC in Tennessee (pdf list), so the answer to Hobbs’ (likely rhetorical) question is zero.

Hobbsein does have a valid consern here, even though he (as usual) jumps to a conclusion without even attempting to research and dig deeper.

What exactly would prevent Planned Parenthood from taking any of the taxpayer funds that they receive and putting them into their PAC? Perhaps someone with a little more knowledge about their accounting can answer this.

No, not when one knows that abortion care is only 3% of what Planned Parenthood does. Of course, Bill Hobbs isn’t interested in facts any more than the TN Republican Party is interested in providing affordable health care for the millions of working women in this country. But there is that whole “parenthood” part of the Planned Parenthood name that they like to forget about.

Services Planned Parenthood provides include prenatal care, gynecological exams, birth control services, PAP smears, pregnancy testing etc. etc. etc.

I realize that “Planned Parenthood” is a wingnut dogwhistle for “abortion” but just because they don’t have an other way to rally their base to the polls this election doesn’t mean they can lie about a legitimate healthcare provider that just happens to provide abortion services as a tiny fraction of the many other things they do. Penis-Americans probably wouldn’t understand that a lot of women go to Planned Parenthood for a zillion reasons OTHER than obtaining aboritons.

    Oh, pardon me while I yawn . . .

This is so 2004. Think I saw it on VH1 last night. Tennessee Republicans are so intellectually bankrupt. Can’t they come up with anything new?

Hobbs’s post can boiled down to this question: Can Planned Parenthood give money to its PAC?

If so, Hobbs has a legitimate concern. If not, he doesn’t and is just making up a controversy where there is none.

    Joe,

Corporations cannot donate to PACs or candidates, so the answer is no (even if they had a PAC in Tennessee).

Hobbs has his answer, it appears.

That’s what I figured, Sean. I didn’t know for sure, but that sounds about right.

That’s the charitable interpretation. One familiar with his track record might be more inclined to suspect he “asked a question” to which he already knew the answer, in order to insinuate that the answer was otherwise without directly lying.

Jon: be careful . . . you may be giving Hobbs too much credit as to actually “knowing” then “insinuating” anything. That requires a higher level of cognitive and symbolic representation/manipulation than I suspect he can muster.

To paraphrase Colbert: he just feels these things in his gut and then hurls whatever invectives he can think of to see what sticks.

Ah. Apparently this is part of a larger GOP campaign.

As I said in my first comment, “…just because they don’t have an other way to rally their base to the polls this election ….”

    Lather, rinse, repeat.
