TNDP Made Public Records Request Of Smith Letter

Posted on July 14, 2008 at 3:05 pm

From the word processor of Tom Humphrey:

NASHVILLE - The state Democratic Party has acknowledged obtaining an email that state Republican Chairman Robin Smith sent to Gov. Phil Bredesen through an open records request last month, then making copies available to others.

But Democratic Chairman Gray Sasser says the move was a matter of curiosity, not an attempt to smear or embarrass his Republican counterpart, as Smith has said.

In response to an inquiry from the News-Sentinel, Bredesen spokeswoman Lydia Lenker said that a review of records today shows that the Wade Munday, the state Democratic communications director, requested copies of any email to the governor from Smith on June 13. The administration provided the document on June 18, she said.

Uh, Hobbsie, who cares who in the Governor’s Office told the TNDP? The email was public record.

Also, I think “Post Politics” reported that the email went to the Human Right Commission members. Maybe they told TNDP. Again, who cares? It was public record.

Hobbs may have a point, though, on why he and others can’t get other “personal” communications under Open Records Act when Lenker stated all personal email is public info.

I’m a die hard Democrat, but I am also a journalist and would never reveal a source, but the Opens Records Act must apply to all.

Because Hobbs is obviously partisan as well, someone besides Hobbs should investigate this angle of the story…some paper or television station who is supposed to maintain objectivity should follow up on Bill’s claim that he and others have been denied access to emails that were personal from the State.

There’s a whole other story involved in all of this.

No matter what side one is on in this Smith matter,(Hobbs and I are on different sides on almost everything) Open Records has to apply to all.

    Just sayin…

Hey, maybe Drew Johnson can get Gray Sasser to make all the requests for them. Sasser gets records almost as fast as Naifeh gets a carry permit.

What is the big conspiracy if the Gov’s office told the Tennessee Democratic Party about the email? Would a Republican governor not do the same? It was simply releasing an email. I understand the contradiction that now exists in what emails can/should be released (sounds like all should be released). Other than that, a Republican governor’s office would have done the same thing with an email sent to it from a Democratic Party chair.

Come on, this whole thing has been engineered. You can’t tell me that the chair of the Republican Party, who had been appointed to the HRC by a Republican governor, didn’t know that the current Democratic governor was going to take her off the commission. And you can’t tell me that same Republican Party chair didn’t know that her email to that Democratic governor would be made public somehow. Smith is playing games.
