Jen Peebles reports on Rep. Jim Cooper’s backup:

Glenn English, the NRECA chief executive, also testified and got into a verbal tussle with Cooper who at one point referred to documents he had downloaded from the group’s internal Web site. English announced dramatically at the end of the hearing that the group had complained to the FBI that Cooper violated federal law by logging into the private site.

This week, Waxman fired back with a letter to English asking whether the national group was involved in the excessive spending found at the Texas cooperative and requesting documents and answers to questions about its spending on entertainment.

The Texas cooperative paid about $2,000 for its leaders to attend a Celine Dion concert in Las Vegas in 2005 during the annual meeting of the NRECA. The former head of the Pedernales cooperative said the tickets had been reserved by the national group, Waxman said in his letter.

Waxman wants to know how many tickets the national group reserved and whether they paid for them. He also wants to know what tickets for entertainment and sporting events the national group has purchased in the past five years.

English has until July 23 to respond.
