Like Josey Wales, They’re Not Coming Back

Posted on July 9, 2008 at 8:55 am

Aunt B. thinks that the citizens and rulers of Nashville have to face a fundamental fact about the Metro Schools:

And you know, I’m tired of hearing about “Oh, if only the middle class would come back to our schools. Then everything would be okay.” How long have middle class parents been yanking their kids out of our public schools? Thirty years?

It’s time to stop counting on them coming back, hoping they’ll come back, or dreaming that they’ll come back. We’ve got to move forward as if they’re not coming back because, unless they suddenly drop out of the middle class (which, with this economy, is a possibility) THEY’RE NOT COMING BACK.

We’ve got to move ahead without them and serve the kids we have and meet their needs.

Right, and 30 years ago no one was ever going to move back downtown either.

I believe AuntB is right. Parents have found alternatives to the public schools that give them a product (a quality education) they want. Unless MNPS can compete they will continue to lose kids to the private schools and as generations grow up in the private system it will be harder than ever to draw them back.

Instruction and course variety in public schools are so often superior to what kids get in private schools, so it’s unfortunate that parents feel they have to move away or go private school to be sure/hopeful their kid will be safe and will not be subjected to drugs and uncivilized behavior and will not adopt same, and will have the fair amount of attention the kid deserves and should expect from teachers who now must spend disproportionate time and energy on massive numbers of kids who are learning the English language and are so far behind. This situation has destroyed our schools. Public schools are essential to our national cohesion. The writing is on the wall for our nation. And it ain’t graffiti.
